Agree it is a total rip - NC still does it, but when you buy a vehicle you do not have to have it inspected until the following year when you get your new tags or tag sticker. So if you buy a piece of junk with bald tires and no brakes, still can drive it for a year before inspection is due. SC stopped in 30 years or so ago. Most places barely look at your vehicle and call it inspected. Very little income made from doing it, if any, and why if they know you just hand you the inspection!

Doesn't Washington state have emissions testing? That would catch the pollution the air cars.

Not any more (at least in King County).

Also agree that inspections should be mandatory: I have seen cars with literally bald tires (the steel was poking through), taillights not working, bodywork dragging, etc. And that is almost every day.

Indeed. I would have expected California to have something like this - but oddly they don't. We have smog checks every few years (I think on new vehicles you don't have to be smog checked for 5 years or something). To the best of my knowledge neither ICE or EVs have to undergo inspection - and especially not with only 140 miles, new car, right from dealer. Really weird that that is a requirement.

If you live in Houston, DFW or Austin/SA you still have to have emission testing, LOl

We live in CommieFornia and there is talk that Governor Hair Gel wants to start charging a "per mile" tax because if there are more EVs on the road, there will be less gas tax (which is $1.08/gallon on top of the already high prices), I paid $4.75/gallon the other day for our RAV4 Prime).

And here in Texas we have to initially pay $400 more to register an EV than ICE. After that it’s $200/year. Excuse is to make up for lost revenue from gas taxes. For comparison purposes, the average ICE driver in Texas pays around $80/year in gas tax.

Florida used to have vehicle inspection but did away with it about 30 years ago. It was a total rip-off.

Don't worry, you'll still get to pay the $7 fee in addition to the EV fee. Now it's just called the "inspection program replacement fee".

EVs have been around for more than a few years in all states. Don't worry, they know how to deal with them when it comes to emission tests. Most of them will pass, unless you take it to a shop that hates all EVs. Your Rivian is not the only EV on the road.
