I took delivery of my R1S in April after an 18 month wait. I absolutely love the driving, ride and performance of the vehicle. However I just sold it (for more than I paid for it) due to the extreme heat in the cab and the poor AC. We do not have covered or shaded parking at my office and when I would go out to lunch the cabin temperature was routinely above 130. It would not cool down on my drive to lunch or the 15 min home from work. The compressor also continually whined which was annoying. No Apple Car Play or XM radio were also factors. This is just not a car for Florida until improvements are made to the AC and adding a sunshade to the sunroof. I hate losing the car but I hope to buy another one once these improvements happen..

You should have tinted your car. For the minimal cost, I’m now routinely 20* lower in camp temp when it sits in the hot sun.

And my AC works great, even better after latest update. Was actually just thinking after driving my Ford Explorer yesterday how much more quickly the cabin cooled. And it makes a slight whirring sound in the beginning but so did my Tesla…NBD.

There are plenty of things to do to mitigate the heat. Tint, roof and / or windshield sun shades, pre-cooling your car, etc. I also do not park in the shade at work and when I stand up from my desk I start pre-cooling the truck and by the time I make it out to it 3 min later it is significantly cooler.
Sorry it didn't work out for you.

So you created an account to say you sold your S because it didn’t have features Rivian says they don’t ever plan to add and because you didn’t want to tint or turn on your AC to precondition the vehicle before driving to lunch.…

Bro, he was expecting not to have to do anything to the car to fit it into his lifestyle. Whether that's a pipe dream, poor planning on his part, or Rivian not setting expectations, it doesn't matter. Not the car for him.

Nobody likes a hot car so I totally understand your frustration. It sounds like you already sold it but I will say this for anyone else who may read it.

Newer vehicles today with glass roof will heat up more when sitting outside in extreme heat. No car is immune...heck even my 2017 Chevy Bolt got really hot inside here in MD.

Also, the R1S has a large area inside to heat/cool. The R1T has a smaller area but these factors are still important.

Are car in the summer heat will become an oven inside especially if it has a glass roof. My bolt had no sunroof.

1) vent the windows - any car will get like an oven inside when it's 90+ outside and the sun is beating down.

2) put a windshield shade in place

3) get shade for glass roof

4) get all windows & windshield if legal in your state...tinted with the highest heat rejection tint available.

5) Activate climate control at least 15 min before you return to truck.

6) try parking in a different location or position to reduce sun exposure.

There may be other tips as well. Living in the south especially you must take many of these measures to keep the vehicle cool in the summer heat ?

Did you have Rivian look at it? There are a few reports here of factory over or under charged AC systems. Once serviced, these people are reporting the problem solved.

We live in the Florida Panhandle. Our R1T sits out in the sun most of the time. We covered the glass roof with an opaque shade. We also remotely cool down the truck when we are going to use it. When we go into a store or restaurant, we leave the pet cooling system on. This has worked very well for us in our hot and humid summer climate.

Why even bother making this post? There were many things that could be done about the heat and it seems like someone who lives in a hot climate would know that already.

Things like this are why I cannot wait for pre march sales to be over. He bought the truck and flipped it and is using a nonsense reason to justify making a few bucks at Rivian's expense then came here just to let us all know that? I live in TN its not much cooler here in summer than in FL and my truck cools just fine. I know how to use the app to precondition though so maybe that's the difference.

My AC is ice chilling cold (re-circ/LO) in 103 degree temps with no tint and I have to regularly turn the blower down or take it off LO. I usually keep it on LO most of the time and then shut off the center vents because it way too ice cold. I instead redirect it to the windshield and floor.

Of course I pre-condition my cabin. As in hello, I paid for a car with a feature to remote start. Why would I not use that feature to help make my life / experience better.

I have nothing tinted and don't use any shades at all. I have no issues with the AC blowing cold.

I do have issues with the AC compressor being mounted to the firewall and causing N/V/H but warm AC in 103 degree temps when it feels like 108 is not any issue with my June 2023 build. I can regularly take my cabin down to 70 degree from 120 degrees while it's been baking outside in 103 temps.

30 degree differential between exterior temps and interior temps is normal. If I let it run long enough it gets into the 60's in the cabin.

Windshield tint would make a huge difference along with having the rest of the windows tinted. The roof would be a nice addition but at the bare minimum do the windshield and rest of the windows.

My temps on the screen regularly read 108 while its 103 outside and I have no issues.

The thing is I like the car and don't care to make $15,000 - $20,000 flipping it and making a bunch of excuses in the process to justify the greed.

Instead I just buy a ton of $RIVN stock at $15 and $24 while laughing all the way to the bank in my R1S with ice cold AC.
