My biggest issue at the moment, and the reason I have not remounted it is that I cannot apply the firmware update without an android device. I can download the app with iOS but it does not see the road top unit.
I had a comparable issue. Sound quality issues but no longer have an android phones handy. I tried the USB drive firmware update approach they offered and it did update but didn't fix my particular issue. They ended up sending me a new unit which seems to be working pretty well so far.

I wish I had other physical buttons beyond what already works in rivian. If I want to have it read and respond to a text or whatsapp message I have to touch the banner on the screen and then it is all voice as normal. Or I can use Hey Siri and do it via voice.

Overall, it is great though and a fully functional carplay without losing rivian features. Of course I'd prefer it be integrated into the main display and work with all the steering wheel controls not just pause/unpause and such.

Nothing Burger. Rivian integrates with Apple Music from my phone well enough and they are improving their navigation. Sorry.

But love the mount and application for a overloading navigation application is great - stable and accessible.

To each their own. I actually still use the built in navigation. I mostly use it for voice based text / whatsapp messaging, audible, teams, amazon music, sirius xm, and occasionally more obscure stuff like onx. For me it is all add-on functionality that Rivian does not provide.

Lack of CarPlay is why I do not have a Tesla or Rivian, and I won't own either of them until they reverse course on that.
Hmm, I bet you will own an EV without CarPlay. No need to reply it’s not a discussion but an opinion. Give it a few.

Ha. I'm pretty stubborn. I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission or turbo, both of which are much harder to avoid than no CarPlay.

My current EV (which is not automatic-- single speed means no shifting) has carplay. If it turns out no EVs have CarPlay (seems unlikely), I'll just not have an EV or not have a new one.

Always funny when people say, "no need to reply".

I'm guessing there's no Aux input on the Rivian? I suppose that if you can't even plug in a USB, then an aux input would be WAY to "advanced" to ask for...

The BMW i series have carplay for example. I was thinking of getting an i4 or i5 to replace my car before I had some issues with my truck that made me think I'd rather go to EV with that first. I didn't want to buy another diesel as good as they have been to me.

Has anyone tried the new RoadTop 8.9" unit? Thinner bezel, finer screen resolution and maybe improved Bluetooth?
I have this model. I am pretty happy with mine although see my notes above about having to wait for them to ship me a new unit. The biggest difference visible difference between the old and new unit's software was that the way it is configured my phone connects directly to the bluetooth on the Rivian instead of doing a passthrough like the previous version.

This works better for me. Kind of like having dual controls (or triple if you include the phone's screen.) That fixed all my sound quality issues while still letting me do everything I can do on my BMW carplay on my Rivian carplay. Feels like a more integrated solution. (If you ignore the second display and the wire. :( )

One remaining issue and one thing to figure out. Every once in a while it restarts the carplay. I haven't found a pattern. Sometimes it will go several rides without restarting and sometimes it will restart a few times during a long drive. Have to ask them about that. The apps keep running including voice and audio but I don't like seeing the screen turn blank and then reappear later.

Then I also need to figure out a switch. I'm powering it off usb-c instead of cigarette outlet since my Rivian doesn't have one (my guide says people didn't use them much- wish they'd surveyed me.) Anyway usb-c seems to always be on. I kind of expected it to turn off when locked but it does not seem to.

am still befuddled that Rivian has chosen to use their own navigation/phone control system and that many here defend it because it either CAN be developed to be better than Android Auto/CarPlay or that Rivian will somehow find a way to make more money with their proprietary system
I totally agree. The most interesting point is the defenders of NOT having Carplay. I dont see how you defend not having the option that can only be considered “better”. As an also Tesla owner its one of my biggest complaints there. At least Tesla’s nav is workable (and yes I know the real point of carplay is the full mirroring). I have only owned my truck less than two months and on long trips I am forced to also run my google maps on my phone so I can add stops or choose the route I want to take (and not be forced into Rivians route which for example will not accept my insistence to use RAN chargers as I noted here: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...ill-getting-routed-to-non-ran-chargers.16827/

So are you just having to disconnect it from the USB-C every time you are in and out of the car?

I've got a 10XXX R1S that I'm picking up next week. I'm still holding out a small hope that it will have the 12v under dash, but not counting on it. Just ordered the roadtop though. I wonder if an OBD adapter would have the same issue?

Congratulations on your new R1S!

I'm planning to try a usb-c on/off toggle like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C9J8CT3Y/

I've ordered it but it hasn't arrived yet. Otherwise, yes, I have just been pulling the cord for the time being. I haven't tried the OBD adapter.
