September 2021 pre-order. First half of 2023 was first delivery estimate. I started off with an R1S el cap with 22" wheels, BM+DA, and some accessories (tent, roof rack and wall charger). Eventually my delivery date was pushed back to July 2023 and I later changed color to Rivian Blue and added the PPF protection and my delivery date again was pushed back to Oct-Nov. The delivery date then updated to Nov-Dec. I didn't realize it was because of my change (or not?). Some months later after visiting a Service Center I decided the LA Silver just looked better under sunny and cloudy conditions (and dirty) so I changed color again (and by now, the tent was no longer available) my estimate again was going to update but it ended up staying at Nov-Dec. I decided not to touch it anymore. I don't remember when I was given access to the Pro Shop I just remember there were only R1Ts available. I didn't check back for a good while until about 3 weeks ago when I noticed they had an R1S configured exactly how I wanted minus the PPF. I thought about getting it and looked at the other configurations available. I thought nope...I'll get the first one and returned to that config to confirm it and it was gone! Only 2-3 minutes had gone by and it was gone. I checked every day since and no LA Silver R1S with 22 black wheels with BM+DA and PPF. In fact, LA Silver with 22 black wheels seems to be the 1 config that never shows up because I saw everything else. I started thinking that I should maybe get the black 20 AT and pull the trigger (the black 20 All Terrain wheels show up in many configurations in the Pro Shop and the 21 default wheels also show up a lot).
I didn't want the 20s because of that thick threat and the fear that it would be noisy on the road. I didn't want the 20s because of the mileage hit. I know people are getting All Season tires on the 20s but tire shops won't all do it and from what I gather the gain in mileage is almost as good as 21 or 22. The only thing going for the 20s was the offroading which I'm not going to be doing and the availability of 20" tires). The 21" was never an option once I saw how expensive it would be to replace a single tire. $5-600 for each tire is a lot...especially if some people are only getting 10k miles out of them. I like the 22s, I think the wheel looks amazing and that yellow caliper popping out looks great. There is enough availability with 22s that I think I can find a decent price. People have said the 22s perform well in snow, well even offroading and give great mileage. That's what I was stuck on the 22s (although, like i said, I almost bit the bullet!)
Yesterday morning while getting ready for my son's early ice hockey game I refreshed the Pro Shop screen and I already had the filter set for LA Silver, 22, Black Mountain Dark Ash and voila....it shows up. My eyes must have doubled in size. I said, ok...double check. Crap, it has the undershield protection! Dang, no PPF. I thought to myself...I have 2-3 minutes before someone snatches this. I'll get PPF aftermarket since people have complained the Rivian 1500 dollar PPF doesn't cover lights and it's from a pre cut kit. OK, that part is fine...but the undershield?? 2k for a stupid undershield I don't intend on using? Well, I guess this is where the desire to have the R1S overcomes your logic. I hit the confirm button and decided to justify the undershield later. Maybe I'll take it offroading here and there....maybe someone will want to steal a component underneath the car (lol) and maybe it is only 45 extra lbs.....maybe it is aerodynamic (lol)..... In any case, I hit the confirm button.
I completed 7 of the 8 steps. I intended to pay it in full but have to move money around first. I contacted the Rivian Insurance contact who had quoted me a week earlier (very reasonable insurance rate- R1S cheaper than the Tesla Y!!) and let him know we're ready to roll. He contacted me today and said he checked (apparently, these guys have access to exactly where your car is) and saw the vehicle was still in the factory even though I had a VIN #. I expect to have it paid in full by Wednesday or Thursday (apparently I only need to move the money to my bank account and then have Rivian just transfer the money from my bank to them via a login).
Now, I'm just wondering how long I'm going to have to wait for that call/email that says it's ready for pickup! I haven't told my wife or anyone!
Wish me luck!
