So I am thinking of getting the tailgate pad and that has me thinking about the gear guard cable for when the bikes are in my bed. They advertise that the core is braided steel with a nylon cover, but how secure / strong are the ends? Are they metal or just plastic? I.E. If i was a thief, would i just snap or cut the end vs trying to cut the actual cable?

Any input would be appreciated.

They aren't serious security cables. They're more for deterrence, and to slow an attack so that the camera gets them in the act. If someone enters your bed with tools in an attempt to steal your bikes, they're stealing your bikes. Even a Kryptonite won't stop a prepared attacker, just slow them down.

Ends are metal and the thing they latch into is all metal. If they are going to steal your bike, they will just cut the cables, which are pretty weak against a cutter designed to cut cable.

I use a long security chain and a shackle lock to lock down to the hitch receiver if I need to leave bikes on the truck unattended for more than a short period.

This is one of the Rivian features I’m most disappointed in… pre-production advertising led me to believe that cutting the security cables would trigger an alarm. Without the electronic connection/sensor, these cables serve no benefit over an ordinary cable that could be used through the cargo tie-downs.

seconded. I expected a cut sensor on the outside that would trigger the alarm

They can be cut with nail clippers, so if you're in a bad area and concerned about somebody stealing an expensive e-bike then I'd bring it inside.

The cable is helpful for quick rest stops or when at a camp ground to prevent sticky fingers, but if left unattended in a bad area, somebody that wants it will easily get it.
