I don’t think this has been discussed but maybe I’m not searching well.

Has anyone else noticed that the puddle lights with compass logo are virtual in the overhead view of the vehicle? I can’t figure out why Rivian went to the trouble of doing this, but it’s an interesting detail.

For example, with the driver’s door open I see this on the center display where both puddle lights are symmetrical and the points of the compass are either parallel with or perpendicular to the vehicle body. (Related, there seems to be part of a virtual puddle light centered under the driver’s seat)

However, the puddle lights are projected from the underside of the side view mirrors and they move as the doors are moved. This means that with the driver’s door open, I see the puddle light further away from the vehicle and the points are now angled relative to the vehicle body. This is what I see in real life where the vehicle is parallel with or perpendicular to the cut lines in the concrete and the compass points are now at an angle:

I did notice this, and thought to myself that it was totally unnecessary... ?‍♂

With my excellent observational skill I never even noticed this. I always miss little details of stuff because I'm really used to looking at things from 50k feet.

For sure more of a big picture sort of guy. With that said its pretty cool but unnecessary.

It doesn’t bother me at all, but it’s an interesting quirk or feature (quirky feature?), as Doug DeMuro would say.

I assume that someone was playing around with what could be done using the Unreal Engine. They are removing the real lights projected on the ground on the display and substituting virtual ones.
edit:missed words

It definitely wasn't always like this - my driver's side puddle light was horribly misaligned on delivery (the lens was actually loose to the touch in the mirror housing). It was super obvious because the 360 view showed the puddle lights in totally lopsided places. Mobile service was able to fix it on an unrelated visit for a recall campaign.

I wish Rivian allow us to order a different design instead of the Rivian logo for these puddle lights. Would be nice if it's something we can change out.
Maybe something one of our vendors could look into!

I’m probably too boring, but I’d be fine with just a circle of light.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Rivian logo is almost everywhere on these vehicles, but I assume that a new company establishing itself is going to be enthusiastic when it Comes to branding. I like that their logo is simple and symmetrical.

Noticed this and it's an unnecessary distraction. If I am looking at the video, I want to see something there. Atleast it turns off when moving.

I am pretty sure it is actually showing you what the camera sees, not a digital overlay of what it thinks the light should look like.

Perform this same test with a piece of black tape covering half of the light. I bet the display is going to show you the real half covered projection which will proves it isn't a virtual addition since the car has no way of knowing about the tape.

Alternatively, place something distinctive on the ground that exactly lines up with the position of the compass logo when the door is open. You are going to see it in the camera screen still perfectly lined up with the logo.

Yes, the logo moves when you open the door in real life. But so does the camera.

The car (annoyingly) doesn't know that the camera moves when you open the door. When the door is open, it displays what the camera sees in the same place relative to the car as it does when the door is closed even though the camera is pointing in a different direction.

Since the logo and the camera move together, the display will not show the logo moving when you open the door, but you will see the ground under the logo moving as you open the door.

You made me think of an unintended consequence of this augmented reality view. What happens to objects in the puddle lamp area when the virtual lamps are shown? For example, if I had dropped my phone where the passenger side puddle lamp is shown on the center display, would I see it or would it be completely obscured by the virtual lamp rather than illuminated by the real lamp?

I may have to do some testing…

You are right. I covered the light with my finger and there was no logo on the screen.

Sounds like this may have been a summer intern project.
