R1S - Quad Motor or Dual Performance Motor

I have an R1T and have had it since June 2022. But my wife wants more room for our family transport. I made R1S reservation in August 2022 and just got ready to configure email. The thing is the only motor options are Dual and Performance Dual, no Quad.

I am torn on giving up my Quad R1T for a Dual Performance R1S. Should I be? Is the Dual Performance just as good?

I know that Dual Performance is close to the HP and torque of Quad but would I notice or need the extra?

Wait, so you have no option for quad motor? That's very interesting.

I can't say 100% on DM as I haven't driven one. Statistically speaking though the 0-60 time is very close. About half a second or less. Dual motor will be slightly more efficient than quad.

Have you reached out to your guide about the inability to configure quad motor?

The email stated:

“Congratulations! You’re officially invited to configure your R1S.

You’ll be able to choose from options that deliver in the next 4 months and include the following battery + drive system combinations:

• Max pack + Dual-Motor AWD or Performance Dual-Motor AWD
• Large pack + Dual-Motor AWD, Performance Dual-Motor AWD
We’ll keep you updated as new options become available to you in the configurator.”

So right now I can pick things that would be deliverable in next 4 months. Does not mean that Quad is off the table.

I did ask guide about it and she noted the same about the ability to get it within 4 months. She then sent me an invite to the R1S shop. Which was sent via text conversation but I have not been able to access it yet.

Hmm, I got the time to configure email a couple of days ago, and it made no mention of those battery/drive choices.

Might be me dreaming, but I'm certain I have read on the forums (here or the owner's) that Quad was not a configuration option anymore. Would make sense as Rivian tries to bring everything in-house and increase profit. IMHO, what I saw in the tear down video of the dual motor, it seems to be an upgrade/optimization from the quad setup.

I ran into the same when locking in my configuration and got the same exact email. Reached out to my guide and he told me Quad option was removed because they’ve already allocated all of those configurations for the next 4-6 months. He was available to offer me access to the R1S shop to see if I could find a preconfigured quad option there I would like. Still waiting for the shop access as it takes 48-72 hrs after manager approval. You might want to go that route.

This makes a lot of sense. They were supposedly production quantity constrained with the quads. And I suspect most of the backlog are quads. So, if someone wants a vehicle sooner, they can configure a dual, or get one from the R1 Shop.

Performance differences are minimal. range impact is minimal since you can manually put qud into conserve and seemingly get similar range. If its just a grocery getter and once in a while may hit an easy dirt road go dual. If you plan on doing any kind of serious off-roading or the few tenths of a second 0-60 are important to you then wait for quad.

I got the same email but when. I log in to configure the quad motor option is available. Though I chose standard dual.

my guide is telling me after a config is locked in he can’t grant shop access which seems wrong based on everything I’m reading. Anyway to address this?

I think there will be for the standard pack that is not out yet, jury still out on the large pack.

Search for the Monroe video were he talks to RJ about the dual motors. It is worth listening to.

Hi, I have a Jul ‘22 R1S reservation and recently got an invite to configure dual / performance option only.
Reading the posts above, do people have a guide assigned at this configuration stage? I only got an email, no guide.
I emailed them to give me shop access but they didn’t agree.
Any insights/ experience that others can share please

If you don't get pre March-22 pricing for a quad then I'd go for the Max Dual-Perf. I went from a quad R1T to quad R1S and there's a performance drop on the S for whatever reason. I'm betting the Dual Performance is going to feel very similar so at least you'll be able to rationalize the modest drop-off. The extra range of the Max is an absolute must.

Once I locked in my config the website showed a guide under my reservation tab. There was a name and contact info for the guide there.
