I think the main idea is that they're a lot more durable. They imply in their advertising that the lifespan of the tire should be a lot longer. Maybe it's worth it if you tow more.

I'm not sure how 80# = 350#. I assume it's an unsprung weight estimation.

These seem expensive when compared to the Continental TerrainContact tires, also 60 pounds each?!?! They are almost 20 pounds heavier than the TCs at the same size.

I believe the LTX Platinum is a load rating E tire. They're a lot more durable and likely weighty because of it.

The more equivalent tire to the TC would probably be the LTX M/S2 that was also recently announced. And I believe they come in 275/60r20.

I must be missing something here. Continental's website says 56.8lbs. Are you looking at the non LT version? If so, you can't compare it to the LTX platinum which is an LT tire
