Since covid hit EVERY OEM struggles with service time this is not a Rivian specific thing.
It took a whole month for my f150 to find a service location that would take my truck for repairs (all others declined straight stating being full and cannot take more jobs) then it took them 4 months(!) to fix it (side of the cab got hit so they needed to change the doors and replace part of the b-pillar). They had only 1 service person who could do body work and he was drowned with cars to fix.

This was nearly two years ago and since then it got worse for everyone. There is not enough mechanics in this country anymore who can/willing to the trade anymore.

My Rivian broke down. SC could schedule me for an appointment 10 days away. They started fixing now and might be done in 10 days. Rivian provided me with a loaner I am using so I am not really impacted by my Rivian being broken.
Ford gave me NOTHING for over 4 months, I was without any vehicle for myself had to use wife's 2door Jeep for everything.

I would say given it is 2023 Rivian offers a very good service compared to legacy auto.

Rivian's quality and service problems can't be pinned on COVID.....

My wording was poorly chosen (as usual), I apologize.
What I wanted to say (in relation to some posts that bashes Rivian service times) that since COVID started the whole auto service industry struggles significantly (as many auto services have sent away many technicians) so Rivian should not be called out specifically that auto service works are not running timely. My understanding is that auto service works are not running smoothly for any auto maker these years (<- this was supposed to be my point :D).

Maybe involving the word 'COVID' in my original post was a mistake on my end, I can agree to that as well.

Service center called and said in a picking up tomorrow. They just updated the firmware and said everything’s fine, that the last update didn’t take completely. So I guess that’s it.

That's an answer, not an explanation. Seems too convenient to blame it on a software update. I'd want to know exactly the bug they found that says the end result is your entire vehicle bricking itself while driving.

When I pick it up tomorrow, I will ask for more clarification - I agree, it was very vague "The firmware didn't install correctly on your Rivian". ugh

My experience with Tesla firmware updates are that some require updating all the body control modules in addition to other smart things on the network. I can see an incomplete firmware update causing certain out of date modules to fail.... but shouldn't one of the final steps be asking the modules if their versions are current?

Wife and kids were on their way to Target today and our R1S started flashing all sorts of red error codes and and the car started slowing down so they pulled over. Unfortunately, they were not able to do a hard reset as the car wouldn't let them (just held down the buttons for a while but nothing happened). I went and swapped cars with them and while waiting for the tow truck, was able to reset the car using the sleep mode reset function. Once it came out of sleep, I was able to do a hard reset and all the error codes went away. I still took it to the Rivian support center so they can take a look at it, will report back when they tell me what caused it. Also asked them to fix the center console rattle while they have it ;)

Rivian support was great, they checked in a ton to make sure wife and kids had a ride, offered an Uber if they wanted it etc.

What sucks is that the hard reset didn't work for some reason, and I could tell Rivian tech supported was frustrated too. Thankfully everyone is safe and sound. Does get me wondering about reliability long term. We have 15K miles on it (1-year old) and have done some long road trips, and would like to continue to do so.

Worth mentioning: Two Rivian owners drove by and both stopped to make sure I was ok - love our community!
We just picked our R1S up last week. Driving it home Saturday night, 36 miles with 150 miles of charge on it and it starts lagging up the hill, first at 40MPH max then just dies. Called Tech, reset didn't do anything, battery fully dead. Called for the tow truck, my wife, 5 year old daughter and me stranded in the dark, 30 degrees outside. Waiting to hear from tech today, but can't spend that money on a vehicle that isn't reliable.

No offense, but your post is identical to several others recently from people who join the forum, post one time about a supposed "serious issue", then never come back to follow up or even respond to questions. Most likely anti-EV trolls or stock short sellers. Now if you're not in either of those categories I apologize. But would recommend starting your own thread rather than "piggy-backing" off an already solved thread and follow up with photos of the error messages, what Rivian's response is, etc. Good luck.

Of course, but my point remains. As deliveries have ramped, we've seen a lot of first time or new posters coming in with issues. This has been the case for nearly every car ever made. Go into some of the BMW forums and you'll see the same thing.

This is more fore new people coming into the board, looking to possibly purchase a Rivian.
Agree here. Was talking through everything with my wife. We are to take delivery of Rivian blue quad r1s in coming weeks. Was talking through things to check. She pointed out the most recent massive recall on Toyota highlanders and that it was from a company who is known for manufacturing.
In the end I expect some bumps. It is how they manage when they happen. And it appears on the whole that Rivian has stepped up on that front.

To be fair to the one-and-done posters, Tesla had a semi-secret buy-back program where they'd make you sign an NDA regarding the transaction. The penalty was at least the buy-back amount plus some other assundry threats. Rivian could be doing the same and the result is no follow-up posts.
