When dual motor came out I briefly considered it. A bit more range but ~ 200 less HP. Who needs 835 horses anyway, right? I played with the configurator - the price was a bit off-putting. Another 7k for a slightly better battery and less horses...didn't seem like an even trade to me. Then OMG I noticed the brake calipers...I thought I was seeing things, but once I confirmed that sealed the deal for me. I love the quad motor! and the brake calipers!

This product differentiation was announced on their social media accounts, and web site, with pictures and in writing… starting with announcement of first customer dual motor ever to be built. That was what? 5~6 months ago? The configurator images were not updated until several months later and some of us openly criticized Rivian for it. Customer comms is not among their strengths. So if you don’t pay attention to what they do release, you put yourself in for surprises.

I got a CY R1S, since I have pre-march pricing, I think caliper color was a major reason why I got quad.

We like the way that the yellow calipers show through the wheels, especially the 21's sans the aero covers.

Best part of Rivian calipers? No brake dust!
Some have been begging for blended brake/regen. If it happens I hope we can turn it off with this as one of the reasons!

This was actually a really good feature in my previous Tesla. If regenerative braking was limited for any reason (high SOC, etc) then it would automatically apply the mechanical brakes in a way that you'd never notice a difference in 1-pedal driving. I really hope Rivian does the same because it's pretty frustrating having to completely change driving habits if you charge to 100% before a road trip.

I am good with the option, but want to be able to turn it off. I have 30k on mine thru one full winter and have completely adapted to the variability, so I don't want some unknown amount of friction braking getting involved.

I don't want to lose the energy or wear the brakes.

The R1 handles better than many cars under 7300 lbs. Try it, with appropriate caution of course. Your mind will be blown.
Sorry, respectfully disagree. Having spent hundreds of hours on the track, I can assure you it does not “handle” . Skidpad is about .82g, stopping distance measured in furlongs. 0-60 is impressive, but that does not the “handling” Make. Perhaps stick to things you can support with data.
