I don't understand these problems... Routing is calculated by Google. Even if MapBox has inaccurate streets, the initial route is set by Google which we all know is probably perfect.
This isn’t true at all. The nav. uses Google map tiles because they are free (just like Tesla). Google also gives out free POI search because it helps them gather relevancy data for their ads business. Google loves to track you just like everyone else. They really love to know where you want to go.

Google won’t give out the street graph and navigation/routing unless the OEM goes for the whole Android Automotive ecosystem, like Volvo did. So just like Tesla, Rivian uses MapBox and tries some homebrew shit turn by turn on top of it. But the road data is terrible, the traffic data is terrible and the models/algorithms on top of it are also terrible.

Even when Google and Rivian agree, the ETAs produced by Rivian are usually way too optimistic.

I understand experiences are different, but it's not fair to call it the "worst there is".
I challenge you find an EV with a worse nav. experience. Most of them have CarPlay, some have Google. Tesla is… improving. Maybe you can find one, but not on a $100K car. In my experience, even the Hertz portable “rent a nav” produces better results.

Apparently you haven't used a current Honda native nav system. It is so impossible to use I can't even find my home address with it. I tried a couple times and finally gave up. It is completely unusable.

Honestly I think you are greatly over exaggerating the nav experience. I’ve found funky routes in literally every nav system I’ve ever used which is why I usually preview the route prior to departure.

I used the Rivian navigation on a trip over 5k miles in places I had never been as well as places I was somewhat familiar with and was able to make it to all of my destinations and complete my trip.

Have I had the system suggest a route to me that is different than I might choose, yes, does it reroute when I choose to ignore, yes, have I found some of those routes better, yes, have I found some of those routes worse, yes.

Bottom line for me, it is a mapping assistant, gets me where I want/need to go.

Is this a 2023 100K car? Rivian’s sound system also beats my last setup, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s competitive.

No it’s a 2003 $200k car. But that’s irrelevant. He said Rivian’s nav system is the worst there is. He did not qualify that he was only referring to 2023 model vehicles that cost $100K

I found another navigation system worse than the Rivian, and it’s wireless to boot. :)

FWIW, I'm pretty happy with the nav in the Los Angeles metro. It probably varies widely in accuracy in different regions. I would probably prefer Google maps, but they have taken me off a freeway just to get back on again several times, so the Rivian nav should lose no points there. The integration with destination SOC and preconditioning are winning points. Other than traffic data, I think it works pretty damn well, and if you have issues with it, just pull out your phone.

It absolutely destroys the nav on the 2017 Volvo it replaced, I can tell you that. But that car had CarPlay, thankfully. No nav is perfect. As long as they keep improving it, I can't complain.

I tried to use the navigations system when I returned from San Fran airport and it told me to charge up at an EVGO stop in SAn Jose. The navigation system first of all does not show options on the map like the TEsla does. It doesn't give any specific info. about the chargers, it just says if you want fast chargers or available chargers but you are blind as to what you will be getting until you get there.
Can we focus on the real issue here, which is somebody who claims to live in the greater bay area calling it "San Fran"?

Seriously. I figured I would relax and read this thread with a glass of whine, then spit up all over at ”San Fran”

in other news, I’ve had no issues with the Rivian map routing so far (only 1000 miles). Apple Maps wanted me to literally drive off a cliff once.

This was recently posted on Reddit. My experience with Rivian Nav in in the past 6 months has been far better than my experience with Waze in the past two years. I'll use it over Waze 100% of the time.

I've been using Waze for 11 years now. Waze has its own issues (example exit highway, then reenter) and sometimes you feel like you are in a social experiment where Waze wants to try new routes.

Rivian navigation has gotten better and the last couple of times, on trips between Central Illinois and Chicago, Rivian Nav and Waze has followed almost identical paths. I still trust Waze more as Rivian Nav does not seem to pay attention to real time traffic data (does Rivian app even really have it) and has routed on congested freeways while Waze was able to adjust and find better route.

If you think its the worst you must not get out much. My 2021 Audi is total and complete shit next to the Rivian's and I've done an entire cross country trip with tons of charging just fine with the native nav. when you charge you have a lot of downtime. Use it to check the nav next time instead of pissing and moaning about it not doing all the thinking do some yourself.

The Rivian nav is leaps and bounds better than my 80k dollar 2021 Audi S car.

You bring up a good point regarding congestion. I rarely need/rely on congestion re-routing because it rarely happens where I live/drive. If it does happen, it's a few minutes delay I can live with, and frequently I know the relief routes myself if I want to re-route.

We've had nav systems in our cars since our 2005 Acura MDX - I really like having a dedicated nav system even if we have Carplay available. I'm a little concerned that the Rivian system requires internet access to work. I had a backpacking trip a year ago where the end of the trail was in a cell-free zone. I hit "Home" in my Subaru and knew which way to go. My buddies, in another car, were relying on their phones for nav and went 5 miles the wrong direction before they had a strong enough signal to point them the right way.

Anyway, we primarily use the Rivian nav system, but when it suggests something that doesn't make sense we double-check it with Waze. It helps that on our long trips there are always at least two of us in the car. I did order the EV Sportline Carplay screen and am planning to use it only on longer trips (where I'll probably put my destination in both systems).
