I really hope you are right @R1Tom but given Rivian's track record, and the fact that they absolutely have to conserve cash given how few quarters of cash they have left, I suspect that they simply can't afford a major, and costly redesign. If anything, they would need to go the opposite direction (like Tesla) and find an even cheaper solution for new builds.

It feels and looks tentative to say the least. I was expecting a much improved version after waiting so long but I am still afraid of it not holding up. I hope I am wrong

So I had my electric tonneau replaced today at the Phoenix SC. According to the work order it took 2.8 hours. I truly notice no difference whatsoever. In fact it could be noisier. I asked the tech what was actually replaced and he said only the slats and the spring inside the box above the gear tunnel. No new motor, no new rod, no new gears. I am crossing my fingers that this fix does the trick. I truly have my doubts. Time will tell. Fingers crossed.

Interesting. I’ve thought about looking into the cost of having added to mine. I just received the manual cover and its just ok. I don’t think I’d pay the new price for it.

Looking at this. I had good luck with the backflip on my last Silverado (years ago) and this looks very similar. Which model do you have professional or low-profile? Watertight? Secure? Strong? The Rivian manual version is just idiotic to me and most def not worth the $1,800 Rivian is asking for it IMO.

Based on what others are reporting, I am really disappointed that after over a year, this is the best Rivian could do. I delayed my R1T because the PTC was no longer in production.

I will have to see a PTC from a new production batch to make final judgement, but the early reports are very disappointing.

I had the manual cover at the ~$875 price point and refunded it before delivery (The return was even a Sh*t show)

I purchased this one: https://shop.agricover.com/product/lomax/lomaxtruckmodel/22-ON_Rivian_R1T_4ft_6in_Box_B2 in matte black. I'm very happy I went with matte as it matches the rest of the truck nicely. I bought it from Luke at <[email protected]> for $800 including shipping.

You have to adjust the cover appropriately, but it is as watertight and secure as it gets. I drove in a downpour and the bed was bone dry. However, sometimes a little bit of water gets in the sides. I would say it is more rare then the OEM covers because it sits ontop vs. in the channel. My neice/nephew sat on it while we were having lunch this weekend with no issues. You could probably stand on it, but I won't.

My favorite part about it is it is rock solid, reliable, I have full faith in it, and I much prefer the flip back operation rather than pulling everything out the end. I use it ALL THE TIME. I have to imagine if I had to pull it out of the channel I wouldn't use it half as much.

The PTC fix was supposed to arrive mid summer and basically showed up in December. So add a few months to all tentative release dates

I still think there maybe two different versions going forward....

The cobble things together and limp existing thru warranty period for OG covers.

Then a more extensive redesign for new builds.

Maybe they took all that time for the redesign but then decided it would be way too expensive to retrofit to all the existing fleet and instead just are trying to fix the biggest sources of failure on the OG units.

Complete speculation on my part....but seems plausible.

My guess as well. They will include a new version of the tonneau in the configurator this year and it'll be pretty expensive (~$4,000) and not something that can retrofit to the original trucks.

Probably comes along mid-year with the 800v refresh (my speculation).

I have a friend who has a 2014 Model S, where the handles auto-present, and he’s on his 17th handle assembly replacement.

I had issues with my Model S door handles in less than a week from delivery last year. I can't believe they haven't completely changed the design yet. I know that it looks cool, but the operation is noisy and they break a lot.

Can the Lomax retractable cover be used with a Rivain power cover if it’s fully retracted?

As far as the noise - it’s somewhat alarming, and not what I expected. But I have nothing to compare against except for a loaner which attempted to jam up when I tried to open it once.

I agree I think it’s just as noisy and clunky, but I’m hoping the new slats and the stiffer springs do the job. Let’s hope it continues to work properly.
