What will the ICE eqivalent of the R2 be? Or what should it be? I keep thinking of a Bronco Sport, which would be disappointing.

Should be twice as good at 2-3 times the price made in America, not Mexico.

I would expect the ar2 to be like a Grand Cherokee, Passport, or Edge - a larger two row SUV. Then the R3 would be a compact Escape, Cherokee sized vehicle.

I’d guess it would be even smaller than those, something closer to a Subaru Forester size, to make it really distinguishable from the R1S. The Forester is 18 inches shorter while the other examples are about 12, which I think would still be too close to the S. Just my guess though. But then the R3 would be really, really small, so it’s hard to say.

The R1S is a 3 row SUV that really isn’t that big, so trying to have 2 additional, distinct products that are each smaller than the S and each other while still being desirable at the price point is going to be difficult. Maybe the R3 won’t actually be a smaller vehicle, but perhaps be a Suburban-size vehicle and the S will be the middle child. At the price point Rivian is gonna need to sell a super small R3 for it to be competitive, I don’t know how they’re gonna make something that small also desirable.

No idea, but I would pay a lot of money for removable rear seats, large flat & tall cargo area, lower tailgate, no carpet.

... or maybe I should convert my Honda Element to a BEV.

Curious how the R2 size will compare to the Tesla Redwood, and R3, if smaller than the R2 to the smallest planned Tesla and the Fisker Pearl.
Will be very interesting to see who produces what the fastest. Would put my money on Tesla, Rivian, then Fisker.

Based on what appeared in RJ’s Q&A months ago, and his height, about size of current generation BMW X3.

People are talking about size but I also wonder about this with regard to function. At a lower price point, can Rivian can satisfy both the sport track crowd and the off-road crowd?

In other words, is the R2 supposed to be a 4Runner killer or a Model Y killer, or can it possibly do both?

Crossbreed of smaller (first gen) Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Ioniq 5. IIRC, @Dark-Fx coined the term fastbackeer, which seems a good fit.

Regardless, by definition and need R2 is gonna have to meet the sub or circa $60k price threshold and therefore will be smaller with utilitarian trim.

Basic level of trim that can be marketed as suitable for off-road use like a Base level Wrangler or Bronco.. Higher levels of trim would add faux-leather, bigger screen and better stereo. Should shoot for at.east a 280 mile range and 320 miles range for larger option battery pack. Base R2 $55k and R2 Ascent starting at $65k.

I think Bronco Sport is the right segment, and I actually like the styling. It's just that the Bronco Sport platform is mid. A Rivian in the Bronco Sport/CRV/RAV4 size would be nice, IMO, but the sculpture makes the R2 seem a bit bigger.

Chevy Blazer, Ford Explorer, Acura MDX, Range Rover Discovery, Jeep Cherokee and so on.

There are lots of midsized ICE SUVs that R2 is addressing.
