Overseas R1S- ICELAND- SIM Card

In December I transported my Rivian R1S to Iceland. I had some issues with a drained battery after the transportation and this forum proved most helpful in guiding me in the right direction. The vehicle runs and drives perfectly in this remote area and I hope to share some images soon with the R1S surrounded by glaciers and volcanoes
As for functionality I have managed to connect the vehicle to my home wi-fi, and done the software updates. However, the built-in sim does now work. This means that some features do not work properly. I was hoping someone could inform me if I can replace the SIM card with one from a local phone company or suggest a way to work around this? Thanks.

There is no currently feasible way to do so.

I believe I read here when this came up in the past that Rivian uses eSIM, so it would require them offering an update that allows connections to other networks. I bet it will happen eventually, but haven’t heard anything specific.

I don't think it's going to be possible at all because Rivian is eventually going to charge for LTE access and they don't want to take away that revenue stream by letting owners choose their own cellular providers.

Can you get the apple carplay device from evsportline ? Then at least it would be using your local cell coverage, so you'd get maps, waze, spotify, phone calls, messaging, etc and work through cell service.

IIRC, infotainment base is Android. Any mobile programmers out there tried backdoors for accessing underlaying systems? May be able to add an eSIM this way and set as default.

I would not mind paying for a feature like this as long as it works overseas.

Not sure if this would work, but have you tried a mobile hotspot in the car and then joining the Rivian to the WiFi? I'm not sure if the wifi pairing turns off when you drive but if it doesn't, this should work.

Wi-Fi does not stay active when not in park.

Tesla had this same issue with WiFi. They eventually enabled WiFi to be active when not in park with a software update. A quick fix for this would be for Rivian to do the same. Then, just use a mobile hotspot to keep the truck connected while in use.

It would make a lot of sense since this is a software feature.

In fact, this used to be exactly how Rivians worked in the early days...
