They are already making longer cords for their V4 stations, so they could easily swap those in for the current V3 station cords.
We don't know what's inside V4, could be a more powerful cooler.
I'm sure tesla will do the most cost effective solution here.

I travel with a J1772 extension cord if I am going somewhere I might be charging overnight and have a high-likelihood of encountering an ICEd charger (like at a hotel). I could see carrying one of these that's rated for DC currents as well for the same reason. But I certainly am not going to pay $1000 for it.

How much current do those 250kw chargers push? 500 amps I presume? Its literally off the charts. Not the same for AC charging.

Not to mention weight of the extension, my guess, would be over 50 lbs, can skip the arm day every time you go to supercharger ;)

I guess my point is it would be too much trouble to use one of those.

I wonder if adding the extension cord would reduce the amount of electricity going through...

RJ addressed the location of the charge port in this video yesterday, specifically at the 6:50 mark.

Part of the reasoning has to do with curbside charging, but also accommodating existing owners and there current charging setup, as well as the RAN chargers. Whether or not this is a valid reason is up for debate.

The reason for not having a charge port at the front of the vehicle has to do with cost and because there is a single motor option for R2. It would be very costly to run high voltage cable from the back of the vehicle to the front when there is only a single motor.

Longer is more expansive, I am sure they are already running their current setup at capacity even with active cooling, increasing length almost certainly means increasing gauge too. And with proposed extension they just want to pass the cost onto consumers, this is why i think its bad idea.
Tesla is already making longer cables. The V4 chargers have long cables on them.

"Additionally, we encourage all vehicle manufacturers to standardize charge port locations to the rear driver side or front passenger side", ok Rivian is doing the opposite on R2/R3, doesnt seem to make sense
In fairness, Rivian isn’t “doing” anything yet as the R2/R3 vehicles are at least 2-3 years away from production and delivery…

Single motor is likely only “planned” so they can advertise a $45k vehicle. There probably won’t be many ordered or produced…similar to the single motor MY variant….

ok I would wonder why they would engineer a working prototype with the wrong side then. RJ has nicely listened to someone(s) (what we were all thinking) related to starting R2 production in Normal and took a page out of Steve Jobs book by really keeping the R3 underwraps until reveal to create a nice buzz. He gave some good reasons as to why its where it is so that legacy installs at our homes would not be affected and the proposed extension cord would open up V3. Im wondering why they cant just re-adjust things at certain charging locations like allow parking behind, etc.

Front passenger is better than driver's rear, mainly because if you do have curbside charging, it would be annoying and more hazardous to have a cable run across your car and have the plug sticking out into the street.
I agree however it does depend on your country which side of road is passenger vs driver, which means different build configurations to deal with

I wish Tesla would just make their cords longer. They can still have them liquid cooled, accommodate other EVs since they decided to open up their network, and then everyone can easily charge no matter where their port is. Just like any ICE car can get gas no matter where their fuel door is.
I’m sure they will make them longer, with all V4 upgrades and installs. But it will be a long time before all of their chargers are upgraded. Heck there are still v1 and v2 sites out there.

The parking behind is the ticket. There are some Tesla locations I have been to that actually have parking on the back side and for sure that would work.

I know. It would be just as easy to place the charge cable outlet at the left rear. Why not???

Brian

This has been addressed. RJ stated it was an Engineering decision that keeps proximity of the port close to the battery management and reduces costs.

That's why not.

It's not a conspiracy, and 'just change it' is a shortsighted request by people who have zero appreciation for what it takes to Engineer products. It's not as simple as drawing it 'on the other side' on a piece of paper.
