I've been reading and watching some of the Cybertruck reviews with interest. This conclusion from Edmunds Cars seems typical. "If you want a working truck, buy the Ford. If you want a versatile, fun, electric truck to support an active lifestyle, buy the Rivian. And if you want a Cybertruck, buy the Cybertruck.

This reminds me of the time when my wife's firm held a formal dinner dance around Halloween. It was advertised as a costume party. We were one of the few couples that came in costume. We even won the award for best costume. Almost, everyone else was in formal attire. I learned that night that it doesn't feel good to get a lot of attention if it is just because you look silly.

I think Elon got it wrong. It wasn't the Cybertruck that needs a thick skin, it is the Cybertruck owner.

So your skin is too thin to get a Cybertruck?

I've said this since the day they announced the official specs. It doesn't nothing better than the other trucks. It does everything average to bad.

Suspension, audio, rear wheel steer, camera quality and upgraded glass seem much better than what Rivian currently offers. My suspension is noisy and slow, audio system is awful and front glass is apparently made of sugar. Cameras on the Rivian are just unacceptable for a now $100k vehicle.

Questionable taste and a predilection for cult membership are all that’s required to own a Cybertruck.

I was surprised at the turning radius test. The four wheel steering apparently doesn’t buy that much turn radius reduction over the other trucks… at least not as much as I thought.

They’ve had two new steer-by-wire failures since I commented about it a few days ago in another thread here. It’s hard to figure out precisely what is up, and you get the feeling Tesla is talking to owners to somehow suppress info (ie, they don’t seem to come back to the forum once their vehicle is in service.)

Some posters believe there is no redundancy forSbW power.

All incidents I’ve seen turned up very quickly — after just a few days of ownership, so it may be binary, either iccurring immediately in a small number of builds or not at all.

Suspension is questionable as initial reports show lots of failures due to them cheaping out in areas. Audio isn't really a "truck quality" but yes I agree its better. Rear wheel steer is cool but looking at the Edmund video, doesn't seem to actually help with turning radius, so its just another thing to break like is very common on those systems. and Glass yes the Rivian's sucks, but no idea how well Tesla's will hold up since its so new, or will it be better than Lightning.

So my statement (and Edmunds) statement is still correct.

The Ford does better "work truck" stuff better (Bed size shape, power outlets, ease of getting into/out of bed etc etc)

The Rivian does better day to day/adventure/lifestyle stuff better (usable day to day storage, easier manuverability around town or off road etc)

The Cybertruck just cyber trucks

No way that Tesla would spend the money to make redundant systems. They cheap out on everything.

Redundancy is difficult to design in and adds a lot of expense. The failure rate is also many times higher because of the number of components that you add to the system.

First, you add a second motor. Then, you should add a second sensor to measure steering wheel angle. What if the two sensors read differently? OK, add a third as a tiebreaker. Plus a circuit to integrate all of these inputs. You must notify the operator if any of the three fails.

Now there is the processor unit. A failure here would be disastrous. You need to have redundancy here as well. What if the main processor and the backup send different signals to the steering motor? The motor needs to be intelligent enough to resolve this. The designer just keeps going down the wormhole.

Then of course you could just lose 48V power.

Didn't Tesla just announce they re-engineered the Cybertruck for a greater rear turning angle? Will be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes.

I can't even bring myself to watch comparison videos or reviews of the cyber truck because it has no appeal to me.
