I’m all for heat pumps, I have one for my heat in Colorado. But I don’t think it’s going to make a huge difference in a car the size of the R2 let alone an R1.

Am I the only one plugging a space heater in the center console platform area?
I have a little mobile heat pump plugged in.

I also run a dehumidifier in the back seat for those dewy mornings.
I'm thinking about putting a sail up in the cabin in front of my heat pump as well to help with range a bit.

My Kia EV6 GT-L has a heat pump which works just fine. Even thawing out my car in West Yellowstone.

Rivian R1T R1S R2 / R3 has heat pump (confirmed by RJ) thaw-IMG_2221

My Rivian R1S has a four-slice toaster with a fan for a heater - it also works just fine.

Both vehicles have butt warmers and heated steering wheels so I shall survive in the first world.

I can't find the video now, but an EV focused YouTube channel (I thought it was Out of Spec, but I can't find it there) did a comparison of a car with a heat pump vs. the same model without (VW ID.4 if my memory is correct, although since I had the channel wrong, that might not be it.)

IIRC, I was about 8% difference. Or about 25 miles range loss from a full charge.

Through two winters, admittedly in not-so-snowy Alabama, my R1T has performed exceptionally well compared to the huge range decrease I experienced in my Mach E. For my use I'm a solid "meh" on the whole heat pump thing.

I'm in agreement with and have the same use case.

But there's also nothing wrong with improvement and innovation.

Those like you and I will keep our trucks and love them all the same, heat-pump-less and all!

People who wait in line for the latest iPhone that has the same features Android had 7 years ago will be on the front lines to buy a 'refreshed' R1 because it has a heat pump ;) [I'm sure there are edge cases where this would be beneficial for someone.]
