My Airbnb charging kit

Based on the original post, I purchased a GearIt Tesla Destination to J1772 adaptor. I just used it for the first time this past weekend and it was fabulous. The quality is really good - it does not seem at all cheap. Given that it is just under $70, as compared to at least $170 for a TeslaTap, it is an extremely good value. It doesn’t have the amp oomph of some/all of the TeslaTap adapters, but I pretty much only use destination chargers in overnight charging situations.

Great news. I don't think I expected any charge rate loss, but I suppose that the quality of the metals or.something could bring into that. Like you the only time I'm ever using that adapter is for an overnight charge at a destination that has a level 2 Tesla charger so as long as it is faster than a 120v outlet it doesn't matter to me.

I was pretty impressed with the quality of it and really impressed with the quality of it for the price like you said.

I was just thinking today how this whole thread might now be pretty obsolete because the superchargers are open. Just looking at the incredible number of dependable chargers on the map already and knowing that more are being installed all the time from Rivian, Tesla, and presumably other brands I think we aren't far off from having a hard time finding a destination that you need to use this kit... It's nice to have though

That’s a good point about the supercharger network access. I will only charge at a Tesla supercharger as a last resort as I have little stomach to give Musk any more money. My wife and I just completed our de-Musk-ification process when she took delivery of her R1S. But in a pinch? Yes I will use a supercharger if absolutely necessary, and with a decent amount of satisfaction that plugged in will be one of two Rivians, and NOT a Tesla. ?

I still see validity is this thread (with Supercharger access now), especially if you head to a small town/remote area and are driving locally for a few days without local access to charging... or other remote areas as well.

So, here's my kit, slightly different than what the trend is in this feed, but has a few advantages in unique scenarios I've encountered;

- Full Rivian Charging kit, 120v and 240v included plug adaptors of course.
- If I'm REALLY concerned, I already own a 15' NEMA 14-50 extension cord, but usually leave that at home

Pictured are my accessories;

- TT-30P to 14-50R 120V 30 Amp adaptor - allows connection to 30a RV outlets and some welder connections.

- NEMA 10-30P to NEMA 14-50R Adapter - allows connection to older dryer 3-prong outlets.

- NEMA 14-30P to 14-50R EV Charger Adapter - allows connection to modern dryer 3-prong outlets.

- Lectron Tesla to J-1772 adaptor - Had this guy for a few years. It's a lifesaver when the only thing around is a hardwired Tesla home or destination charger. If you have a J-1772 port on your EV, you should own one of these.

- Inteset 30ft 40amp J1772 EV Extension Cord - This is my secret sauce. It's a 30' J-1772 extension cable. This allows me to get nearly any length I need to charge. It also usually allows me to keep the Rivian portable charger out of the elements (hence cleanish). Even better, if I'm on the road and get ICE'd out at L1 or L2 chargers, I can still charge from a different parking spot. It also works with the Lectron adaptor for Tesla destination charges when ICE'd. Also if I need an extension of any L1/L2 charger, I'm covered. It's lightweight, came with a decent-duty bag that easily fits all of the above accessories inside.

So, that's my twist on my AirBNB and roadtrip charging kit.

That's awesome. Hopefully it allows anyone with any doubt on taking their Rivian for a road trip two areas that don't have high speed charging to feel better.

Well, the extension cable we are taking about here is just a normal cord that runs between the mobile charger and the wall so it is just as "dumb" as wiring in a wall would be from a Electrical panel, etc. The signal your talking about would be between the Rivian and the mobile charger "box"

I was referring to extension cord that runs between Rivan and another J1772 connector, as shown in pictures( Inteset 30ft 40amp J1772 EV Extension Cord ). From my understanding, pressing the button on plug sends signal to charger to stop charging to prevent sparking when unplugging it.

Well it has operated exactly as the normal J-1772 connector would for the last four days at the AirBNB I am currently staying at. I have my adaptors plugged in to a 3-port dryer outlet, into the Rivian charger, out across my 30’ J-1772 extension. Each time I have unplugged during a charge directly from my R1T port (in the rain, yay Oregon coast spring break weather) things have disengaged and shut down exactly as I would expect. Just like my hardwired 60a charger at home, same as any other L1/L2 chargers anywhere.

The extender carries the same communication and charge conductors as the regular J-1772 charge plug… locks the same when the vehicle is locked and behaves the same. While I don’t have an EXACT technical answer to your question, my real world use response would be, YES.

That’s a good idea. I’m leaving Monday and will have enough juice by the time I need to leave. The 1 mile per hour ?makes me laugh.

I'm working on combining your list with the additional items others have mentioned here. I'm walking around with a yardstick (yes, no tape measures to be found) and realizing how short 30 feet is.
