We have tabs in Minnesota as well. Yearly registration. You stick the new year on the plate.

So tabs = registration(sticker)?

In Florida we have stickers on the plate, but I know some states have an obnoxious sticker on the windshield (e.g. Texas)

Ahh I thought tabs were those metal things people add to their tags to try to show they donate to police associations and get some leeway when getting pulled over.

I was also confused. We call them (plates / registration) "tags" here.

What are tabs?

I grew up in the south where a “tab” is called a registration sticker. I live in WA now and find the terminology to be a bit odd on a few things. I’d start a campaign to correct things like this but I think the oddities are preferred. I can poke fun. I live here. ?

I'm guessing it's not tabs, Washington State just isn't that quick (took a month for mine to show up).

I'm guessing the most likely possibility is that it's swag - I've gotten a water bottle and two hoodies since picking up my truck...

Here in Virginia, our license plates and registration stickers come directly from the DMV ("Department of Motor Vehicles"). Rivian has/had nothing to do with sending us those. ?

The purchase process for Rivian in Washington State is funky - technically we are buying from them in Illinois (vehicle even comes with State of Illinois temp plates good for 90 days) as Rivian cannot legally operate as a dealer in the state due to a dumb law that restricted direct sales. The registration and plate process gets weird due to this.

Thanks! Sounds very frustrating. Hopefully in a few years all these weird state laws will be sorted out. I know dealers are fighting against the direct sales model pretty hard in some places. ?

"Tabs" is the term for the registration stickers that go on the license plate. Not a universal term, but popular in certain regions.

I'm guessing that my guide was hoping to keep my wife and I happy - there was some conflict between Rivian and our credit union regarding wire transfers vs cashier's check (CU didn't want to do a wire transfer due to "security/fraud issues", while the initial impression from Rivian was that they couldn't take a cashier's check in Washington State), so my guide decided to send us stuff.

It all worked out (Rivian accepted a cashier's check in the end), and we obviously got to keep the freebies.

Don't know if WA works the same way CA does but in CA, it's not the DMV or the state that sends out the plates anymore. It's done by the dealers/distributors. CA allocates number (quantity) of plates to them, then they assign to the buyers and report back to DMV.

Both Tesla and Rivian sent my plates in less than two weeks. My R1S plates came within a week.
