I reserved and waited for 2.5 years for my R1T (delivered 12/30/2023) with Max Pack specifically to have an EV truck that (I hoped) could make our typically monthly trip from our house in coastal Florida to our condo (with no easy access to charger at the condo) in Ocala, FL, and return… all without charging, and along our preferred (no tolls) route. Typical trip is somewhat over 300 miles R/T. This weekend was my first opportunity to test the range..

SOC: From 100% down to 1%
2024 R1T with approx. 3000 miles on odometer
Dual Motor Performance
OEM 20” Wheels AT Tires
Underbody Shield
Full-size spare
Aftermarket Tonneau Cover (Interrobang)
Cargo Cross Bars installed over bed
SOC: 100%
Vehicle Estimated Range: 369 miles
Mode: All-Purpose – low – regen: standard
Ambient temp range: 73-81
Wind (observational): Negligible along entire trip
Battery temp range: 97-121
Elevation range: 1’-167’ (Florida flatland with a few overpasses and bridges)
AC on for entire trip. Set to range of 73-76
Streaming music for entire trip.
Fairly smooth/conservative driving within 5 mph of posted speed limit for entire trip, with a couple of 'bursts' to pass cars on rural roads.
1st leg: 10 minutes rural/urban mix. Speed: zero to 45 mph
2nd leg: 1 hour 7 minutes interstate with 4 min. of congestion that brought speed down to zero a couple of times. Speed: zero to 74 mph
3rd leg: 1 hour 5 minutes rural county roads with a few scattered traffic lights and slower areas. Speed: zero to 71 mph
4th leg: 10 minutes urban. Speed zero to 45 mph
... and a couple of short local urban trips 10-15 minutes each in Ocala. Speed zero to 45 mph.
Overnight sleep. Gear Guard on. Temp down to about 62.
5th leg (return – same route): 15 minutes urban; 1 hour rural; 1 hour 5 minutes interstate; 10 minutes urban… speed ranges same as outbound trip, but no congestion this time on the interstate.
6th leg. At end of trip arrived home with estimated 28 miles of range remaining, so didn’t stop and instead continued another 13 miles down the road, then turned around and drove back to burn off the last few miles and see what the vehicle would really do at close to zero. Received ‘Low Battery’ warning at 5 miles remaining and arrived at home with SOC at 1% and 1 estimated mile remaining.
Per on-screen trip monitor: 315.4 miles; 6 hours 30 min. driving; average speed: 48 mph. YMMV
Trip Efficiency: 2.24 m/kWh
kWh used: 142
So… in great weather, in flat elevation Florida: Estimated Range: 369 miles; Actual Range: 315 miles (85% of Rivian estimate)
In the years since I first reserved my R1T, charging options have changed of course, and Rivian just recently opened the Daytona Beach RAN charger, which is right along our preferred route and maybe 2 min. off the interstate. And with Tesla chargers coming online for us, good choices will become even more plentiful. So I am happy there is now no reason to regularly tax the R1T's battery with 100% to zero charge cycles… we’ll just stop by the RAN for a quick fill up on the way up or back. But nice to know what is possible if needed.
Hope this is helpful to others considering a Max Pack... even though the Max Pack is not the MAX Pack we all hoped for years ago.
