For reasons I won’t go into here, I use my fob a lot! I hang it on my belt loop with the carabiner. Two months ago, during the course of an “adventure” activity, it disappeared off my belt loop - never to be found again. I ultimately purchased another fob for $260 - ouch. The moral of the story is, be careful using the carabiner. It can be dislodged pretty easily. In fact, the next day after receiving my new fob, I was loading some tires into the back of my truck (swapping out the winters). I had the fob on my belt loop, which was covered by my t-shirt. After finishing my tire chore, I noticed the fob, while still hanging on my loop, had come open ? Apparently, as I was lifting the tires, the fob was forced open by contact. This made me realize how easily this could happen, without being noticed. At least, this time, I noticed it before it fell off. While one may get away with using the fob in this manner, for a long time (took me 4 months to lose it), this type of situation could happen to anybody, at any time. The carabiner, while cool, is simply not reliable!

My solution is to glue the carabiner closed. There is really no compelling reason to have that carabiner, anyway. Once the carabiner is neutralized, the fob can be attached in another more secure fashion ( some sort of hook or real guy carabiner). I purchased a nice little 8” chain on Amazon, for about $8 (actually two for $8). The chain has clamps on each end. Now, I clamp the chain to the fob carabiner loop, which no longer opens, and to my belt loop. I then drop my fob in my pocket. It should be pretty darn hard to lose it, now.

Really bummed BuiltRight seems to have given up on this; I've never had problems with the fob but have never depended on the carabiner for anything serious.

Good solution, but $50+ for that case?!!! Jeez, a dab of super glue on the original carabiner was free and accomplished the same thing. Probably why BuiltRight gave up on the idea.
I mean, I did buy an $80,000 truck... ?

It’s a really nice product and the metal feels great in the hand. I’m really glad I bought one. Totally worth $50 to me.

while the carabiner is a cool idea/look, i agree its not secure if you latch it while adventuring (or working it seems).

i use the wristband for that (though that too isn't super secure in how it latches i think its better). would be nice if they sold those in the Shop for folks who dont have a launch edition.

Actually, the main point of my OP was to point out, to the unaware, the vulnerability of the Rivian carabiner, especially when hanging the fob on a belt loop, backpack, or whatever. How one chooses to solve that issue is up to them. Heck, get a darn gold plated, diamond studded case, if that’s what floats your boat. Got no problem with that ?

This has been brought up before but it's a good reminder for all (and perhaps the first time newer members are hearing about this).

My solution to this problem is that the FOB makes a nice desk ornament. It only gets used when I drop the R1S off for service.

It’s a real kick in the pants that the OWNER can’t delete a key fob or keycard access from the vehicle. If you lose your fob and someone picks it up and is clicking around they can obviously access your truck. That is a major security flaw and I can’t believe Rivian hasn’t addressed it yet.

Can the battery in the Fob be replaced even when the carabiner is glued closed?

Well, you can disable the fob in the vehicle access settings, as I recall. You can also have Rivian disable the fob, if it looks like locating it is not imminent. In this case, I was told that, if by some miracle, I were to find my original fob, Rivian could reactivate it.

How? On the app it only allows you to reassign and in the vehicle there’s no option to remove. You can disable proximity but as far as I know there is no way of removing or deactivating a key other than Rivian doing it themselves.
