Is there any solid data regarding the current amount of pre-refresh R1 inventory? They should definitely hold off on Refresh announcements until they have minimal inventory.

Also, they said they weren’t going to take configurations until late summer, so presumably the new R1s will go to the online shop, no?

Who knows what’s coming? If the R3 proved anything, it’s that Rivian can keep a secret. My money is on an electrochromic roof, heat pump, and new steering wheel. Maybe.

Rivian has repeatedly stated this is a cost cutting retooling and optimization shutdown. Rivian has never stated anything that qualifies as what the automotive industry defines as a "refresh" yet everyone is calling it that, and will likely be disappointed when there is no tangible refresh. The auto industry web sites are calling it a retooling, not a refresh.

Could this cost cutting and optimiztion project include a heat pump? That's a distinct possibility, but even if it does, it's not a refresh, lol.

"CFO Claire McDonough said it will use the production pause to introduce a number of new technologies into its R1 vehicle platform.

“We’ve reduced the number of electronic control units by about 60%,” she said. “We’ve also reduced the length of the wire harness in the vehicles by 25% and given we’re not wiring to all of those incremental ECUs [electronic control units] as well.”

McDonough said the line changes will result in “significant” cost savings for the company."

I don't understand why people keep saying this is not a refresh. Keeping speculations aside Rivian has confirmed and we have seen wrapped cars with-
  • New ADAS sensors
    • Rivian R1T R1S R1 Refresh announcement soon? 1714450651104-jj
  • New headlight bar design (R2/3 like)
    • Rivian R1T R1S R1 Refresh announcement soon? 1714450619393-11
  • Heat pump
  • Registration for Entry and Tri Motor trim

Like are you stupid? Retooling is for factories this is a whole new generation vehicle.

Yes, I am tracking inventories daily and it's kinda high specially for R1Ts. Even R1S sales have slowed down. As of today there are 557 R1Ts in the shop and 80 R1Ss. This has come down from 1100 R1Ts in the start of April and 300 R1Ss. But a huge 250 R1T sale happened to Mevco fleet. They need one or two such fleet sale to ATT or SMB to clear the inventory before selling refreshed R1s.

My opinion:
1) This shutdown is, indeed, focus on cost saving changes and improving profit margins.

2) R1 refresh will be available Fall 2024 after preorder vouchers expire.

Just a guess, of course.

Still loving all my R1’s (although off topic I’m curious about Macan EV mostly because my wife is driving an R1S and prefers a smaller vehicle).

I am secretly hoping for an R1T with a NACS connector, a heat pump, no air suspension, and no glass roof. This will certainly reduce complexity, parts, etc and Rivian could offer a cheaper R1T to spur demand and spark sales again.

Fingers crossed for a new refreshed R1T with NACS, heat pump, a glass roof option and a camp speaker option.

I am secretly hoping for an R1S with no air suspension and the above however this is unlikely because R2 will be that vehicle. Would be great if Rivian offered the R2 with a glass roof option as well

I was speaking with a bank representative at US Senate FCU about my R1T loan today and the rep was surprised by the lack of Rivian customer compared to a few months ago. He stated their highly competitive rates have not changed but demand was way down. He knew the entire Rivian process and was quite helpful.

Way to insult people. This is hardly a new generation of vehicles. It will be new paint colors, some new wheel choices and maybe even a heat pump but that hardly qualifies as a new generation. The styling inside and out stays the same, the dual motors stay the same. The quad changes. There will not be a new light bar - that would involve stamping changes and there is no need for any design changes after just 2.5 years of manufacture.

A refresh is not a new generation of vehicle. A refresh is short for "mid-cycle refresh", which basically means that the manufacturer makes some basic changes (sometimes pretty minor, but can also be fairly significant) at or near the mid-point of the lifecycle for the generation. That's pretty typical among auto manufacturers these days. It helps keep sales up as a generation of vehicle begins to age.

Why’s everyone getting so spun up over semantics? You can call it a refresh, update, retooling, skibidi toilet, or whatever else floats your boat.

There will be changes to how the vehicle is built. It’s not going to be a new generation of vehicle, but that doesn’t mean the changes won’t be significant. For example, the hvac system has been a source of complaints. I wouldn't be surprised if they totally redid it behind the scenes in a way that both improves quality and reduces costs.

It’s also heavily implied that they’re setting the R1 line up for selling in higher volumes, which means different trim levels at different price points.

An employee from the Denver Space said he expected some type of reveal in late May.

I’m guessing there’s still some testing and validation to do
I get they're trying to get rid of existing inventory, but late May is a long time to wait still for those of us on the fence wanting to make a decision soon

electrochromic glass, new camera placement ( no more in front fender more on side mirror) potentially buttons versus door handles indside, potentially different front turn signals, potentially new front light bar matching the angles of the r2's light bar, new tri/ quad motor using enduro units, new wheel / tire options, possibly NACS charging, new wireless charging pad? heat pump?

these are things I've heard through various sources

"Retooling is for factories"

One of your first posts here, and we can clearly see who is stupid, and it's not me. Where do you think Rivians come from, the Rivian maternity ward?

They have clearly stated new wiring harnesses, processor modules, etc as part of the shutdown. It requires RETOOLING of the equipment and hand tools to install these new items. Sorry that you don't understand.

it’s not insulting to push back against all the people who keep insisting there will be absolutely no noticeable (from a driver pov) changes to the vehicle when the factory reopens. The fact is, it’s pure speculation either way & no one knows until Rivian reveals what’s rolling off the line soon.
