Why’s everyone getting so spun up over semantics? You can call it a refresh, update, retooling, skibidi toilet, or whatever else floats your boat.
The industry has settled on specific terms having specific meanings, I thought that mattered. I guess it doesn't.

So let's just call a sparrow a pelican, a seagull , or a stealth bomber, or whatever floats your boat. I mean, they all have wings and fly, right? Close enough?

it’s not insulting to push back against all the people who keep insisting there will be absolutely no noticeable (from a driver pov) changes to the vehicle when the factory reopens. The fact is, it’s pure speculation either way & no one knows until Rivian reveals what’s rolling off the line soon.
I'm not insisting there will be no noticeable changes. I'm simply quoting what Rivian has stated to date. That's not pure speculation, that's a fact. But in today's society, facts matter less and less.

“it's not a refresh, lol.”

You sound pretty confident that nothing of note will change.

I don't understand why people keep saying this is not a refresh. Keeping speculations aside Rivian has confirmed and we have seen wrapped cars with-
  • New ADAS sensors
    • 1714450651104-jj.png
  • New headlight bar design (R2/3 like)
    • 1714450619393-11.png
  • Heat pump
  • Registration for Entry and Tri Motor trim

Like are you stupid? Retooling is for factories this is a whole new generation vehicle.

It should also be noted that QUITE FREQUENTLY companies are continuously R&Ding. And MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, things they're testing DO NOT make it to production.

As an Engineer, I've worked on MORE projects that never came to fruition than were ever released. It's part of the R&D process to test a lot of things and keep the (few) things that are entirely justifiable (practical, innovative, marketable, and/or improve quality).

Just because you saw something in a photo on the road doesn't mean it's going to be added to the production lineup. Or even if it is, a responsible Engineering company will spend years testing new technology to prove it can handle all of the contingencies it may encounter in the field. So, while we *may* see these, it may not be until the next revision.

All in all, it's all speculation until it's not.

Not sure what is unclear about this:

" I'm simply quoting what Rivian has stated to date."

Don't get too excited. The factory shutdown was for retooling, inventory and Process efficiency. The "refresh" will not be much different, maybe they introduce the tri-motor, but any changes to the car itself will be cost cutting measures IMO. My guess is the ditch chrome trim on R1S and remove the camp speaker.

I wonder what effect the fire at the plant had on the re-tooling, re: delays?

We've had our R1s since December 2023. It was in the shop for 1 month and we have a mobile service appointment in May. I think the following would be welcome changes for future buyers.
  • Enduro for quad/tri motor configurations
  • Remove the motorized air vents; it introduces cost, mechanical failure, and inconvenience.
  • The wiper blade control toggle switches (while not accessed regularly) are difficult to access given their position on turn signal stalk. They need relocate/reconfigure these controls.
  • Replace and simplify the charging pad with two coils instead of sixteen.
  • Removable 2nd row headrest for car seat installation and removal.
The following would introduce moderate cost, but many would likely pay for it.
  • Heat pump
  • Powered tailgate
  • Add a backlight to the rear hatch open/close button so it's easy to find at night/in darkness.
  • Ultrawideband for quicker and more accurate door handle presentation.
  • Provide an actual glove box for convenience and safety (law enforcement can not see what you're reaching for under the seat or in the center console)
  • Higher quality cameras, wider FOV, additional camera near rear spoiler for better FOV as lower camera FOV is obstructed when using hitch mounted accessory like a bike rack.

we already know the main change being made for the refresh, theyve been talking about it for a while: reduce and simply the network architecture in the vehicles. i'd assume this will also improve efficiency and vampire drain. it'll be nice if they can call out a bump in range across all vehicles from this but hopefully the biggest thing is moving them closer to profitability.

i think some surprises would be great for a demand bump. otherwise i dont see the demand for R1 increasing and were still 1.5 years away (at the earliest) from the R2. some things that might be feasible and a couple of wish list items.
  • improved camera/sensor arrays for improved Drivers+
  • change or removal of the camp speaker for a drawer
  • improved wireless charging
  • improved sound system
  • biggest surprise (to me) would be removal of the interior door handles - switch to button door release and if they install the newly designed steering wheel (from the R2/R3)

So, May 7th, after market close?

What’s the over under on the new R1s showing up before then? After?
Even if the line restarts production before then, I would imagine they won't release any public details until the call. Probably some "test run" units, then maybe some inventory building before publicly declaring production resumed with any detail. (Maybe a "production restarted!" tweet by RJ with no further detail.)

I’m not sure why people think it’s exclusively cost cutting. Wassim alluded to a new R1 chipset in line with R2 for future updates. That with the camouflage, new wireless charger, and heat pump referenced. I definitely don’t believe it will be a wild redesign or new gen, but I do believe new tech underneath and features will be on the way

i think at least part of this is some sort of hope from (some) existing owners that something better than what they currently own doesn’t start rolling off the line. Odd thought process, but some people are weird like that.

People seem to be forgetting that the R1 platform is 6 years old now.
