You are more likely to scratch glass with flying road debris than with dirty wipers. Glass is melted silica. A hard substance. The wipers aren’t fast or forceful enough. I wouldn’t worry. If anything, good justification to wipe clean the rubber blades from time to time to optimize/maintain their performance.

I remember windshield glass from the 60's being scratched in the exact shape as the wiper blade path. But likely glass is better now. Thanks for suggesting things have improved... And yes, I have cleaned my blades. BTW, back then the trick was to wipe the rubber with brake fluid because brake fluid is mostly rubber conditioner! That's how old I am...Car seats had horse hair for stuffing!

After cleaning the windshield with acetone, mine stopped doing this. Coincidence? Dunno, but I had great results doing that and then a ceramic coating on my Tesla. A lot of Tesla people complain about the wipers, mine were perfect after I stripped the glass and put on ceramic.

WARNING: Acetone requires gloves and open air, not a closed space, to be safe. It destroys paint and plastics. Fine on glass. DO NOT use the nail polish remover version.
I'm getting ceramic coating in 2 weeks. I think he will super strip the glass before and maybe then the problem solved. I will post the results. Thanks again, I am looking forward to the coating.

Ceramic coat glass? Do people do that? It's a durable treatment but I don't think it's so durable that it's meant to be rubbed against over and over? I think it's meant for paint. For glass you can use "next-gen" water repelling treatment like Aerolon, for example.

I do not know the composition of the treatment they use on the glass in the Ceramic package they offer. I do know they strip the surfaces before applying the new coating.

I get occasional courtesy wipes when pulling into the garage, or when starting to pull out. I always thought there is some reflection. I am not too worried about scratching, but it is slightly annoying.

Very intermittent, yes annoying, but hey, artificial intelligence is not real....The bar has fallen, we must adapt. 0 to 60 MPH in 3 sec.in a pick-up, it's a new day. I remember when a rice rocket could not do that.

Keep the grit off the window, or before putting the car in drive or reverse, push the water squirt on the wiper lever, that will prevent scratches.

@Greg Chick, thanks for posting this. We are having the same problem with our R1S, which we took delivery of in late March 2024. I agree that there is a risk of scratching the windshield and ruining the wiper blades (especially here in AZ where its hot and dry). "Courtesy wipe" sounds like manufacturer-speak for "we don't know how to fix this or it isn't a big enough problem for us to worry about".

So for our part we are going to turn off Auto mode. Its unfortunate that we lose that functionality, which was otherwise a nice feature that works well.

As stated above, this is for calibration proposes. They know why it happens. They make it do this on purpose, so there is no 'fix' for it.

I turned off my wipers, if I need them I will turn them on. I got my glass ceramic coated, they told me no water for 2 weeks. I just use a micro fiber towel to wipe off thew bug splats. The splats wipe off easily.
