My wife had an incident, and I downloaded the footage from my dashcam and from the drivecam to compare. After reviewing both, I'm glad I also have an aftermarket dashcam.

I edited the drivecam video (at actual pixel size, but cropped) over the dashcam video to show the differences in resolution.

This is why I also roll with a Blackvue dashcam. It has much better resolution. I wonder if the refreshed R1s will have better-resolution cameras that can actually capture a license plate.

Nice comparison...The DriveCam shows enough information that it's clearly not your fault, but none of the details available in the DashCam. In a hit and run you would have needed the DashCam. It's a bit crazy that we don't have better cameras!

It's more than just a resolution issue, too. The drive cam as a very strong fisheye effect, so objects seem really far away, making small details hard to see. It also has a relatively low POV, which isn't ideal. And it's outside, so it's frequently dirty. It's certainly nice to have the feature with all of the various camera angles, but definitely not perfect.

For sure aftermarket options offer better resolution and performance at day and night. Which one did you install and how is it installed/powered?

BTW, are you still making those biometric locking camp speaker drawers?

Drive cam is good to see what happens, but has horrible resolution. I kept my dashcam after seeing how poorly it could read a license plate.

I have the Vantrue S1, I ran the wire behind the trim, and it's just plugged into the cigarette adapter (mine still has one), completely hidden.

I made my final drawer and stopped there.

I switched to a standalone camera mainly for better clarity at night and during bad weather. The DriveCam clips are sometimes too grainy to catch license plates or small details. I've been using insta360 for some of my recording lately, and the quality difference is pretty huge—clearer video and smoother playback, even when it's dark or raining.
