Hello all,

Picked up our R1S early March and as we were doing walkthrough, our guide helped us point out some panel misalignments and told us to submit a service request for it to be adjusted. The service date is 5/2/24. My question is for anyone who’s gone through the service, is it worth doing and how long did it take to complete? We have a road trip memorial day weekend that we plan on taking the R1S. I’ve read some people’s experiences where bringing it in to the service center actually made it worse. The panel misalignment is minor. We would be taking it to the Costa Mesa SC. Thanks for any feedback!

Is it worth doing: possibly, sometimes it gets way better, sometimes for the hood some other areas take an alignment hit. Depends on if it bothers you.

How long does it take: Costa Mesa is unpredictable, can be 1-2 days or 1-2 weeks depending on their backlog.

The only way things are going to improve is if folks start rejecting vehicles that have poor panel alignment. I told people the same thing with Tesla. You should not have to buy a vehicle and then have it be in service for several weeks or longer for something that should have been right from the get-go.

With that said, I agree with the other poster that they may fix one thing and it could cause another issue. Then again it might be fine and better but there is some risk to it.

I dropped of mine for a few items after delivery including hood alignment in the AM and picked it up in the afternoon. ATL service center, but was pretty minor service.

On my recent service, the service center (not Costa Mesa) caused a dent while adjusting a door and had to send it out to a 3rd-party shop, which added a week to the turnaround.

IMO, if the gap really bothers you, then go for it; otherwise, I'd just wait until the next time you need service for something bigger/more important, and tack it on.

In my case, yes, they did a great job. Timing … it took them a looong time. I drove their R1S and didn't really care.

My driver’s fender was really warped from the factory and had an air gap you could see through by the turn signal. I had that fixed in Normal at it took 2 weeks, I’m glad I did it. However, there was a small gap from the factory at the top of the tailgate and I tried to have them adjust it and it made the lightbar not line of correctly and I’ve had them try and fix it twice and it’s still not right, wish I never would have said anything.

Do panel gap adjustments have to be done at the service centers or is this something mobile service can handle? I'm 300+ miles away from nearest service center. 2 Very minor gaps, passenger side door trim at bottom with rivian logo overlaps another trim piece and on the underside directory below this area the panel gap is about an inch wide and popping out of the track. Tried popping it back in but was afraid it was going to break. December 2023 delivery and was waiting to see if any other issues arise before servicing. All good so far.

Update: brought the vehicle in for service 5/2/24 and picked it up 5/15/24. Unfortunately, when they fixed the panel alignment, they misaligned my driver door and now there is a lot of wind noise when driving on the freeway. Didn’t realize this until after I drove home now I have to submit another service request, with the earliert date 2 months out. I called to see if they can get me in sooner since it was caused by the service they had just done. They will contact the SC and get back to me.

On another note - they did not say anything about warranty being voided with the running boards I installed. Actually praised it as being one of the best looking and sturdiest they’ve seen. I have the Hansshow running boards.

How’d the mess up the driver door?

I went through the same thing at Costa Mesa. They mess up the door gap causing wind noise, because they re-adjust doors by pulling them outward to fix alignment the front fender. When they pull the door out, the leading edge of the door corner window and seal are now proud of the door frame. That is where the wind noise comes from. If you look up my posts, I have pictures posted of the issues.

Unfortunately, in my case, they ended up denting my doors and scratching the front edge of the door, which required my R1S having to go to a 3rd party bodyshop.

Maybe ask if your car can be serviced at Eastvale Service Center. So far they have done a better job for us over Costa "is a mess" a

Well we’ll see. My drivers door is misaligned with the rear door not the front fender so they shouldn’t have to pull it out there. It’s also super minor. Hoping for a good result.

This is exactly my situation. How long did it take for them to fix? I was thinking about rescheduling for Eastvale but wanted to see what they say first and didn’t want to lose my service date 2 months out..

My time frame isn't really a good example.... because it only took a week to mess up the door alignment worse and cause the wind noise and door dents from the door fixture. I only guess about the fixture they use for holding the doors, because both my front and rear drivers side doors had dents in the same spot at the same level across the doors. I think the biggest issue is the door alignment probably needs two people to hold the doors, because they are heavy, but they probably only use one tech. One tech can't hold the door, align it and tighten the bolts at the same time. Hence the front edge of my drivers door being scratched and the four small dents acrross the center of the doors.

Back to the time frame... 1 week was enough to fix it.... but it took three weeks for the bodyshop to fix it and then another week once they had to fix again, because "Mr. George" put the wrong guy on the buffer that day and he burned through the freshly painted clear coat.

Besides all that, still the best car I've ever driven... and I'm happy after it was finally fixed correctly.
