120V outlet on when vehicle is on?

The USB outlets provide anemic power which barely keeps my phone trickle charged. So I use a 120V fast charger to actually get a charge. I use the outlet behind the center console since Rivian didn't provide a single decent power source in the front seats (no 12V cig adapter either; this would provide far more power than the USB outlets).

Is there any way to keep the 120V outlets on when the vehicle is on? I can't seem to see an option for this. All I get is a timer. It's incredibly annoying to have to go through 5 screen taps to simply charge my phone. Every vehicle I've ever owned the outlet stays on whenever the vehicle is in operation.

Just the timer, but you can quick-access it from the "vehicle" menu at upper-left.

It requires that inverter to run, which not only heats up the passenger seat but burns a decent amount of power just staying on. So no, Always On is not an option.

I'm surprised your USB is inadequate, it fast charges mine. Perhaps it's a cable or phone issue? Have you tried the USB-C outlet in the center console?

Like Riviot said, the USB-C charges phones VERY quickly. Both my wife and my iPhones charge very nicely using any of the ports in the vehicle.

Maybe check your cable? You know iPhones like to have those “certified” cables. Otherwise it does charge pretty slow. Make sure it’s an Apple cable or a “certified” one. If you have an Android, then I’m not sure. Try another cable.

I was only asking if the outlets can be on whenever the vehicle is operating. I am not asking them to be on 24/7. I do understand leaving it on all the time would drain the battery.

Yes I tried different cables as I first thought maybe they were defective. I tried all the USB C outlets and they all put out the same 15 watts (12W max on my meter). This is inadequate to quickly charge up many newer phones. I use a 45W phone charger which is very common nowadays (they go up to 90W+ now). 12W only keeps the phone from discharging. It does not actually charge the phone.

I don't think it's too much to ask to have the 120V outlets turn on when the vehicle is in operation or at least have an option in addition to the timer. This should be a very basic function of any vehicle. I can't recall any vehicle that would not power up the 12V cig outlets when the ignition is on. In previous vehicles I'd just use the 12v cig outlet with a tiny 60W inverter. It allowed me to charge my phone using the 45W charger. Any typical 12V cig outlet would do this but Rivian has none.

The reason for simply not on while vehicle is on was given above. The inverter burns a decent amount of energy so it is nice that Rivian made it a very simple selection to turn on or off to avoid unneeded wasted energy if not needed.

To the charger maybe 45 watts but I'd be surprised if the phone was charging at 45 Watts. Most of them are capped at less than 10 watts of charging rate. There are some European phones that will charge at 30 and even 45 Watts and even a couple that are higher than that but these are really special phones and even if you had one at that rate they will charge completely in under 20 minutes so you shouldn't need to keep the outlet on more than that anyway.

What phone do you have?

Samsung charge at rate of 45 watt. My OnePlus can do 65.

Almost no phones charge at 10 Watt nowadays .

iPhone is the slowest with 35watt.

Hi. Not sure what model you have but my R1T has a cigarette lighter on the underside of front dash.

I have the R1S. Apparently the world's only vehicle to not provide a cigarette outlet at the dash.

Mine has one as well, I also have one in the front trunk.

Newer builds only have one in the gear tunnel for the R1T, not sure about the R1S.

Customers should have the option to have it on if they chose. It's distracting and dangerous for a driver to have to tap the screen 5 times just to turn on what is normally on in every other vehicle made. With an average 1.8- 2 miles per kWh, an inverter on standby will have virtually zero impact on range.

Thanks I looked into this as well but the power is limited to about 30 watts max and would not be enough to power a 60W inverter (which is needed for a standard 45W phone charger). Standard 12V cigarette outlets provide minimum 60 up to 120 watts.

Interesting, I didn’t know this was the case. 15w is below industry average and feels like a miss for a flagship. I wonder if that’s something that’s been changed in the refresh.
