Hello:

I will be taking a trip to the Adirondacks in a few weeks, pulling a jets, and I have very specific questions @ how towing/trailering will impact range. My jetski is @ 800 lbs. The trailer is about 300 lbs. And Lets say I add another 100 lbs just to safe. So say 1200 lbs total. Does anyone know the range drain I will experience? My trip will go from Annapolis MD to Speculator NY.

I have read that one can expect @ 50% range with R1S when towing 5000 lbs . But anyone have experience here with @ 1200 lbs? There has to be a difference. Is there any type of chart that shows % range based on weight? I have been diligently planning out potential charging spots, and my plan will change depending on towing impact on range. I don't know if I can risk doing this if my range drops to 50%. Nervous here, and Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

Weight impacts range far less than aerodynamics. A small jet ski trailer will barely drop efficiency. Figure maybe 10% reduction.

Really? My goodness that is great news. Are there any resources you can direct me to to become better educated?

Is the 10% based on experience?

thx again!

I second CharonPDX. Poor aerodynamics are the primary cause of efficiency loss and since you only have 1 watercraft your hit to efficiency should be very low assuming it is a single unit trailer and the watercraft is centered behind the R1S.

Why not do a test run.

Do 20 mile or so unloaded run, and another with the jet skis hooked up, get a delta and that will give you an idea.

Remember that speed to make a difference too.

Edited mile from minute.

Thank you as well. Appreciate it and I am feeling a bit better.

If ANYONE out there has actually trailered a jetski like described please chime in.

I will be going to a mountainous region so the drag is there. My elevation change will go from 40 feet (Maryland) to 1739 feet (speculator ny).

Very good point. The reason I haven't done that is My jetski is at a marina on a floating dock but no ramp. I only take it out once a summer (for this trip) and marina requires boat lift to get it in/out of water onto my trailer. I may have to do this a few days early this year and do a test run.
But meanwhile I'm hoping to find ppl w experience. ◡̈

I tow my Sea-Doo all over California, Nevada, and Arizona. Without the ski I get about 2.3 - 2.5 miles per kilowatt hour on my ‘23 quad large, with the Sea-Doo I get about 1.8 to 2.1, depending how fast I drive. Long sections of freeway and even put it in conserve mode which also really helps. To use conserve mode, assuming you have a quad motor with conserve mode option, when you plug in your trailer, if you quickly go back inside the car, on the screen, it asks if you want to switch to trailer mode, or you can hit “Not a trailer”. If you choose the letter, conserve mode is still available however, none of the other ADA functions are. As usual, the car will guide you to chargers as needed.

Towing our ski I averaged about 1.9-2.1 kw/h. Overall range drop of about 40mi on an 80% charge. 1000# does have an impact.

That said, I don’t think you can rely on the range estimates with a small trailer like this at first. I think it underestimates range as it learns.

Thank you very much. So would you say it decreased your range by about 20%?

Thx. Love the photo and this exact set up I have. So it looks like an average of 20% drop in range. Not too bad. Thx you!!

Hi just towed my Kawasaki 310r from Atlantic City marina to Camp Hill Pa (175 miles) and then after trade took the new Yamaha VX ski back. On both trips I had 80 miles left over. Usually when not growing a ski I have 110 miles left. The increase in drag lowered by efficiency by approx . 15%. Switch to eco mode made a little difference.

My R1T estimated the weight of my two skis and trailer at 2000 lbs. I've only tested around 20 miles of driving and it estimates around a 20% drop in range. I saw 1.8 kwh when I normally get around 2.
