What gen 1 config would you buy knowing the half shaft issues and any drive unit issues with PDM

Hello.

I’m looking for help deciding on QM vs PDM gen 1 configs.

In my case Quad is 2K cheaper.

Concerns:
Half shaft annoyance
PDM lower warranty
Limited PDM motor issues public. If there are any please let me know.
I’m interested in efficiency vs accelleration

You said you're interested in efficiency over acceleration, that means DM is the better choice. Why bother with PDM if you don't care about acceleration?

Dual (even without sport mode) is plenty fast. I’d take range over acceleration in this case because even the dual all purpose mode is very quick. The sport mode requires low ride height so I rarely use it.

Also the AWD is seamless for the dual motor, so you get the best of both worlds. Auto conserve for range but instant AWD if traction is needed. You don’t get that option with the quad.

I have the PDM - whilst on paper it’s a smidge slowed that the QD but in reality, in normal situations it’s more than fast enough. I’ve been off roading in it, and it performed superb (caveat - I’m not a hardcore off-roader but it was certainly up there as far as off roading). Efficiency is somewhat negligible in my opinion in the real world as it’s like saying (caveat, in my view) do I want say a mustang GT or Mustang Shelby but worried about efficiency in choice… why not just get a Tesla at that point if that’s the main thing? All good if you disagree and just wanted to put my take on it and note that my PDM has been fantastic in the short period I’ve had it. Reality is, you’ll enjoy either model I bet!

I am all about the QM torque vectoring and don't really like clutches automatically engaging disengaging all the time and the potential that causes for eventual failure. For me being able to just have AWD all time in a QM and selectively use conserve when ultimate range is needed....is my choice.

Plus the DM AWD system engages at low speed for acceleration, so you get way less front tire wear than QM equivalent

I went through this same “process” and ended up with PDM. I’m not a hardcore off roader but did get the Off Road Package on my R1T and will do some trails. Very happy with the choice so far. As noted above the instant 4WD for acceleration and “conserve” FWD otherwise in All Purpose mode is seamless. Loving it.

I have had both. Now on PDM Max. Prior to that had one of the early build quads. Love them both.

Don’t let the internet noise complicate it too much. The difference between the two in the real world is absolutely negligible. I love the range of the max battery. And I do really like the seamless AWD/2WD transition vs having to choose between front wheel drive ripping tires or all 4 all the time on quad.

I admit. There have been few times when I felt like I lost something with fewer drive modes. Then I am reminded that the ones I don’t have on the PDM I used maybe twice on the Quad when I was screwing around. And then never touched them again.

That all said. Both are a great option. The warranty difference is a joke. Practically nobody or very few here will keep their truck long enough for it to matter.

On the max battery. I have been surprised how much less I think about the range having the extra 80-100 miles of range available. That truly did make the most difference.

Other points to consider, the Bosch motors are phased out and the Enduros use oil cooling on the staters instead of a water jacket. Both cars are the same speed unless you switch to Sport mode. Then the Quad is slightly quicker. In all purpose mode, they are essentially non performance models which is still quicker than most ICE cars. I think they all perform the same off road. The quad benefits from four motors but suffer motor stall. The Dual suffers less from motor stall but has to use traction control. Both are competent.

Interesting that the votes are leaning Quad, yet the comments are leaning PDM.

If you don't care about range (daily driver / hot rod, few road trips) get the Quad and enjoy.

If you do care about range, get the PDM, the automatic clutch disconnect is a huge win for energy efficiency, saving your tires, and always having full AWD power available instantly without mucking around changing drive modes.

quad is overkill for 90% of people. get the DM if efficiency is your biggest concern. DM/PDM design is superior. i wouldn't sweat the warranty. and there's rumors you can upgrade from DM to PDM with a S/W update later anyhow.

I would argue QM is superior design.
