Anyone else disappointed by how weak the body panels are? I was recently walking up to my truck and I noticed that there’s a shallow imprint/dent below the passenger’s door handle. I’m glad I leased the R1T and I hope these issues are sorted out on the R2.

Yes, the doors, hood, and maybe front quarter panels are aluminum and dent/distort very easily. I knew this going into the purchase but, did not expect them to permanently deform so easily :(

Talking to my pdr guy, he mentioned rivian and one other truck brand has similar 'soft' panels.

If you keep this rivian long enough, you too will need a pdr guy lol.

It’s a lease, thankfully. I’ll just learn to accept it and let Rivian deal with it after the lease lol

They will charge you for damages. But I believe chase has $1k damage waiver. Not 100% sure on that, but in their other lease partner (Subaru, Maserati, jlr) they do.

I had a Rivian tech come to my house for a minor issue on my R1T. He took readings and emailed them back to HQ for a quick diagnosis. While he was waiting for the results to come back... he went back by my truck and leaned against it's rear quarter right behind the rear wheel while playing on his phone
I had a fit, but was very polite and made an excuse to lure him away from the truck. I went back there and did an inspection when he needed to use the John. I didn't see any damage, but sometimes I swear that at one particular angle I can see a very shallow indentation that exactly lines up where his butt was on the quarter panel.

Of all people, a Rivian employee (especially a service tech) should know not to lean up against one of their vehicles.

To answer the OP's query... yes, I am disappointed by how weak the body panels are. Most of us here don't use our Rivians as work vehicles, because if we did.. with the ultra soft shell, they'd be a dented mes in no time!

You can actually see slight waves in the aluminum door skins if you look carefully down the side.

The only steel panel is the bed side stamping. All other panels are thin aluminum to save weight.

Work or play is not a big differentiator. Body panels don't discriminate between work and play, they dent when you have exceeded the force required to dent them. The only solution is tougher body panels that resist damage. Or having a body shop on retainer. ?

My last inorganic chemistry class was in 1974, so I learned it as "aluminum."

Turns out that now "aluminium" is the accepted international standard -- but, in USA usage, both "aluminum" and "aluminium" are correct.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/aluminum-vs-aluminium#:~:text=The form aluminum is in common use in the United, chemists in the United States.

Best wishes!
