A couple things about the OP's original screenshots cracked me up:
Rivian R1T R1S R1S loaner won’t go over 80 mph, shows “80 mph max” on screen. 1723563722088-ou

  • He's stuck in the left lane in traffic, but not moving
  • The last speed limit sign he passed was 35 MPH
  • The "80 mph max" appears even though he's nowhere close to that

Well, it wasn't from a standing start. It was a rental car that I had in Germany. I was on one of the Autobahns where the speed was unrestricted and I couldn't get the thing to go over 116 mph, but there's no doubt in my mind that it would have if it didn't have a governor on it. 116 mph is 186 kph and most rental cars in Germany are limited to 210 kph (which is about 130 mph). Needless to say, I was getting passed constantly by faster moving traffic in that little Rogue.

Last year, I rental an Audi in Germany and that was a lot more fun. It had a sticker on the dash that said to not exceed 210, but the car had tires rated for 240 and it would easily go faster than 210. I pushed it to nearly 240 at times, but didn't try to go any faster. For what it's worth, I was still getting passed by faster traffic, even when I was near 240. I really wish we had high speed highways like they have in Germany, but the drivers here don't have the discipline to make it work safely as it does in Germany.
I heard a radio interview with Mario Andretti. He said, “Do you know what they call slow drivers in the left lane of the Autobahn? American drivers!”

Rivian also locks their own R1T service trucks to 80 mph.

I know, right? One thing you learn right away if you spend any time at all driving in Germany is that the left lane is for passing. I mean, that's true here too, but very few people follow that rule. In Germany, it's a different story though. You really just move into the left lane to pass and then you move back over. It's also pretty much the same thing for the middle and right lanes as well. And you know what? It works. It's so much more efficient and you move along nicely without ever having to encounter any rolling road blocks like you see all the time in North America. I wish we were all better drivers here, but we're not...

I feel more safe driving 100+ mph in Germany than I do driving 60 mph on American highways. Sad, but true.

I lived and worked extensively in several European countries and can confirm that Mario is correct. Almost invariably, a driver who immediately moves into the fast/passing lane (the right in the UK and Ireland) upon accessing the highway, and then refuses to budge, is from the US. And I can confirm that the locals are well-aware that that is the case.

I don't know that speed above 80 mph is necessary on freeways but it is very useful when passing on two lane roads. Safer to spend less time in the opposing lane.

You must be crying out for either a speeding ticket, getting arrested for speeding, points on your license, hefty bump on your auto insurance cost, all of the above.

What you see is typical of loaner vehicles, i.e., speed-limited to 80 mph. Cannot change, cannot override, cannot anything.

Tesla loaners have the same speed limit.

Do use the aditional minute you'll spend driving at such pokey 80 mph speed to look at the scenery, smell the flowers, listen to one more song, etc. You might not even notice that you are going at such awfully slow speed.

Is there a way we can set a top speed per key?

If Scott Weiner of CA has his way, all new cars will be limited to 20 over.

The speed limit is 80 where I live, and normal traffic moves at about 85mph here.

I can limit the speed on my Tesla. They come with a feature called Speed Limit Mode that allows you to set a maximum speed for the car. I can secure this setting with a 4-digit PIN to prevent others from changing it.

Rivian should implement this as well as PIN to drive.
