This $12-15 per month charge is really just paying for 5G FTE and Live Security the rest of the features are just extras. It feels like a good deal to me.
Exactly. Unlimited data for the Jeep costs me $20/month. Then they charge an extra $15-25/month for connected services.

I can scroll through Spotify without stopping the song I'm playing.
@Hillbilly , do you have a paid Spotify subscription? I'm just using a free account, but if I am listening to one song, If I click an album or playlist, it just starts playing that album or playlist, I can't scroll through to see what songs are included.

I’ll happily pay $150/year just to not have to do the mental gymnastics to understand what I’d be losing if I didn’t pay. It’s a drop in the bucket. For those complaining, if you don’t see the value in this offering then don’t purchase it. It’s really that simple.

Is there any quality loss with Bluetooth audio? I would be still using Spotify via Bluetooth.
Quick Google search: "Bluetooth max speed is about 1.7Mb/s in real life. Much slower than a 4G connection witch can easily be at about 30Mb/s or more"

Higher data capacity = potential for higher audio fidelity

Gen2 R1 has UWB BT. I don't know what version BT Gen1 has, but I don't think data capacity has changed. UWB offers lower power consumption and better security. https://www.rfwireless-world.com/Terminology/Difference-between-Bluetooth-and-UWB.html

Its easy to test the difference. Just link to your phone and play Spotify and toggle between that and the Spotify app native to the car. I have done it and can't notice any difference.

If you can't hear the difference between native and bluetooth, then enjoy whatever is most convenient for you. I find the compression and artifacts from bt audio to make music sound terrible to me. Just fine for podcasts, though. It's one of the reasons I wish we could just use USB audio input.

I guess I’ll pay for my iPads without data service to be able to connect to it. I thought gen 1 owners didn’t have to pay. Guess I was wrong.

That’s what Rivian customer service told me. Guess they lied or I had high hopes.
Yeah, they made a mistake or (likely) you misunderstood. At most, it used to be a year.

Regardless of what they said or you think they said, forgone conclusion certain services wouldn’t be complementary forever. It’s a for-profit business. Not a charity. Anything that could be pay-to-play will be made so, if it can be profitable and supported by customers. Don’t count in autonomy to be free for gen2 either. And don’t be shocked either. Tesla and others have already proven it can be revenue source. Same goes for infotainment and media streaming. All this arguing isn’t going to change a thing.
