We have the quad R1s large for a year and a half now and decide to get another rivian. We settled for the DM large R1T this time without test drive it. I wished I did though.

The quad is just better over all in power and handling. There is a "slight" lag with the DM when you try to step on it at any speed, more noticeable on highway speed when you decided to do a quick speed up to past other cars. Only thing I felt the DM is better is efficiency. I'm average 2.7 kwh in short 500 miles I have with the vehicle compared to 2.3 with the quad (26k miles). That extra hps and 2 more motors in the quad is way worth it imo

I have both too. My experience doesn’t match yours but I had an early r1t that was terrible. The dual motor needs to be in sport mode, then you won’t feel the lag.

To be fair you cut your power by a good chunk without the performance software. Whenever it comes out you can buy it to get most of what you feel you’ve lost back.

I've driven the quad and loved the acceleration. When it came to buy, I went with the PDM with the Large pack (Gen 1) however. One reason was cost and I knew I was giving up a bit in performance. The PDM is still pretty quick, particularly in Sport Mode and the extra range is nice to have. IMO, it's a great compromise between range and performance.

If you don't want to ride around in sport mode to feel the snappy response, try turning the traction/stability control to "reduced". It's not going to match the power of the quad, but it does remove that lag you feel in AP mode.

If you have the standard dual motor, you are comparing a truck with 533 hp to one with 835 hp. That's going to be pretty noticeable.

The lag is because the rear needs to hook up before you get power from the rear motor. The
performance dual in sport mode keeps it locked up. The standard truck doesn't have sport mode, but you can set stability to "reduced" which will keep the rear motor engaged and take a bit of the lag out.

Note that even in the performance dual, you have reduced power (seems to be on par with standard) in all purpose mode. I found this pretty disappointing as I don't always want to have the truck in low/lowest suspension, and the truck resets itself to all purpose mode after a sleep.

This all makes me wonder what the plan is for Tri-Motors. Seems they have a conserve mode, so that would tend to indicate that the rear two Rivian motors would decouple with some form of decoupled much like the Quads do now. Unless they are going to decouple the fronts using same approach to the decoupling as a Dual.

The lag actually bothered me enough to make a post about it. I might have to buy the enhancement software when it is available. Do you think it is worth it for my complaint and what is the cost?

So when I set the stability to reduce, a yellow warning "off" light come on. Is it reduced or off? When is the stability most benificial? Rain and snow?

The first time I test-drove an R1T, I didn't know about the yellow badging and the guide didn't tell me that I was driving a Quad. From then on, even if the difference is entirely in my head, I felt like I would not be happy with a Dual.

I mean, my wife keeps telling me that there's nothing wrong with the size of my manhood, but the 3.0s 0-60 and 835HP became must-haves.

From the manual:
Rivian R1T R1S Quad vs DM 1723896766082-gv

I'd leave it on in the rain, and I'd use snow mode for snow.

I'm very happy I didn't get a chance to test drive a Quad :)

There's no replacement for displacement errrr what I meant is there is no replacement for Quad Motors.

Now to be fair I have had to think about what I would've done if I didn't use my pre-order discount on a Quad Motor in 2023.

The technology updates in the Gen 2 are definitely worth it if you need range, heat pump, value, Matrix headlights or don't really care about acceleration.

In my case I would go for a Large+ Dual Motor with Premium Audio, All terrain package, Ocean coast / Dark Ash wood and hopefully one that has a performance package already so I can apply the voucher on that too or add performance upgrade with a software unlock down the road.

The next best thing is to find a Gen 2 Max with 2.99% financing and apply the voucher on that.

After that you follow the advice about using sport mode and adjusting traction control / stability control.

For some folks the benefits of heat pump, updated Matrix headlights, range and value outweigh their desire for raw power.

I can totally understand because my desire for raw power outweighs the Gen 2 benefits previously mentioned.

As a shareholder I am glad Rivian is pumping out products to appeal to both type of customers.

I am looking forward to having more folks join this forum with the release of R2 and R3.

We just had the experience of having a QM R1T for a loaner to our DM Max R1S during a Colorado road trip and yes the power difference was very noticeable yet both my wife and I felt it wouldn’t have made much difference in our mountain driving car passing opportunities as our DM. Both are super hero motorcycle like acceleration and our happy for our initial decision for the DM. Would have liked to have opted for the sport yet this configuration was ready to go. However, the ride quality of the QM R1T was noticeably better as I have heard about on this forum yet our R1S showed improvement with its after the latest updates while it was in the shop.

Yeap. When i looked a month ago for my 2nd rivian, there was no quad in the shop. I would have got another Quad but settle for the DM instead.
