2025 R1S Dual Max (Baymax)
On Friday at the end of the day I went to pick up my new R1S. When I got there they told me they were wrapping up the cleaning process and I'd be able to inspect my vehicle shortly.

After a few more minutes they came out and I could tell by the look on the woman's face she was bracing herself for me to have a Karin moment.

Apparently the MOMENT they were about to drive it out for me, there was a suspension fault code. I was able to talk to the one tech that was still in (remember this is the end of the day right before a holiday weekend). He said if that code had happened on a first gen, that would mean they would "replace the suspension". Not exactly sure what he's calling suspension there. New air bags? New everything?? Who knows

But since this is a brand new 2025 model with no miles they were asking engineering how to proceed. He speculated it might just be a control/comm failure with one of the modules. But I'd have to wait until engineering got back from the weekend to hear back.

Without batting an eyelash they immediately offered me a loaner R1S, offered me free delivery when my vehicle is ready and sent me on my way.

Today they reached out to tell me their working on it, there, they think they're close on a diagnosis, but have nothing concrete yet. This is the first time with ANY car at ANY service center I've gotten that level of communication. I love it and wish it was the norm.

While it is a bit worrisome to have an issue before even taking delivery, I can say that the SLC service center team has provided an excellent customer service experience. Fingers crossed they're able to remedy whatever it is soon.

As for the loaner, it's a launch edition R1S in launch green with a green interior. It's A LOT of green. And I don't particularly like green ha ha ha. That said, even though it's not my preference I don't mind launch green. I like that it's a bit more muted.

A few thoughts I've had after doing a lot of miles over the weekend:
-Spatial Audio is life changing. LOVE
-Amazing how smooth everything is but:
-I was pretty quickly reminded why people complain about gen 1 r1s suspension. Not rough. But VERY rebound heavy over repeated bumps. Big yikes. Wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but curious how much different gen 2 will be.
-driver + is much better with stability and situational awareness than Ford BC 1.0, not quite as good as Tesla. But WHY do I have to take over at an interchange where I'm staying in the same lane on the same road??
-LOVE that the charging port locks L2 plugs. Why doesn't everyone do this??
-visualization on screen is hilariously bad compared to Tesla. Curious how gen 2 fares
-Rivian UI sounds are THE BEST.

Overall a bunch of nitpicky tiny stuff because the vehicle as a whole is incredible. Love love love this thing. Can't wait to get mine

When I get mine I will be sure to provide my take on some of the differences. After putting a few hundred miles on the launch edition I will probably be able to spot quite a few

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Awesome that you had such a good experience with the SC. Mine have all been top-notch as well, though I haven't gotten the white glove treatment like this!

FYI D+ in the new Gen2 trucks is positioned to be superior to the Gen1 trucks. The "take over at interchange" thing is a problem for me as well, but I imagine the new platform will help address it.

I'm a Gen1 so am stuck with OG D+, but honestly as An Old I prefer being in control most of the time anyway.

I suspect the reason I did, is because they didn't catch the issue until I was literally in their lobby waiting to take delivery.

This is what I'm hoping for!

At least they gave you an R1S loaner. Would have been a lot worse if you had an enterprise rental.

There was a software update that was in beta where it allowed for D+ to continue on interchanges. It was taken out once production was ready though. We may see it again in a later update.

Oh absolutely that makes it MUCH better. Perfect timing too... Apparently that loaner had just come back from someone else

I would highly recommend returning the vehicle now before you start having even more issues and it becomes harder.

I technically haven't even purchased it yet, actually ;). I will absolutely be going over everything with a fine-toothed comb before I hand any money over

Glad to hear they caught the issue before you took delivery and were also able to give you a loaner. Otherwise it may have been the hassle of roadside assistance on a holiday weekend. Take this opportunity to enjoy the Gen1, and when you get the Gen2, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts about the changes made between versions.

And oh yeah...I have to agree on that Launch Green color. Some people like it a lot but to me it looks like oxidized avocado.

I'm guessing your loaner uses the keycard (at least mine does) so there are four things you'll like even more when you have your own R1S:
  • PAAK and the car unlocking when you get close to it and locking when you walk away
  • Being able to set profiles for each driver
  • Garage door opener
  • Being able to monitor and do stuff on your Rivian from the phone app
I'm much happier having a R1S loaner than an Enterprise rental, but I can't wait to get our Rosey back!

Hahahaha ok that's a hilarious description of launch green. Yeah I'm glad they caught it before delivery too - they're motivated to get it fixed FAST
But yeah once I've had a few days to play with my R1S I'll be sure to post my thoughts on the differences

Fortunately they gave me the option to do the key fob and I GLADLY took that option. I've had the displeasure of using the card on R1S before (a rental) and it was so annoying to use. Hopefully gen 2 is better.

But yeah I do have walk away lock with the fob at least. But getting app access and paak will be a game changer

Well no concrete news yet, but got an update from the service center this morning! They said the lead technicians feel fairly confident it's "not a structural issue". So that's good news at least. They said they're waiting on guidance from the engineering team. I'm guessing that means it's something to do with the new electronic architecture. Given that's the part that's REALLY new with gen 2 and the service center has seen so few of them that makes sense to me that it would take them longer to figure out.

Hoping for a quick resolution here, but in the mean time I've been extremely happy with the SLC service center and their communication. Very personal, timely, and regular. Never had that before and I'd say they're handling it well on their end.

Meanwhile I'm LOVING the launch edition loaner. I'm sure I'll be even more pleased with the Gen 2 improvements. But I'll sure miss the power of quad. I'm REALLY hoping Rivian gives us the option to upgrade to performance dual sooner than later.

Small update today - we ended up finding another vehicle nearby that was EXACTLY the same build as mine. So it's getting shipped here and hopefully I will take delivery next week. In the meantime I'm getting very familiar with my loaner... I've decided to name it "the green monster".

AFAIK they still haven't figured out what's wrong with the one I was supposed to take delivery of
