On Friday at the end of the day I went to pick up my new R1S. When I got there they told me they were wrapping up the cleaning process and I'd be able to inspect my vehicle shortly.
After a few more minutes they came out and I could tell by the look on the woman's face she was bracing herself for me to have a Karin moment.
Apparently the MOMENT they were about to drive it out for me, there was a suspension fault code. I was able to talk to the one tech that was still in (remember this is the end of the day right before a holiday weekend). He said if that code had happened on a first gen, that would mean they would "replace the suspension". Not exactly sure what he's calling suspension there. New air bags? New everything?? Who knows
But since this is a brand new 2025 model with no miles they were asking engineering how to proceed. He speculated it might just be a control/comm failure with one of the modules. But I'd have to wait until engineering got back from the weekend to hear back.
Without batting an eyelash they immediately offered me a loaner R1S, offered me free delivery when my vehicle is ready and sent me on my way.
Today they reached out to tell me their working on it, there, they think they're close on a diagnosis, but have nothing concrete yet. This is the first time with ANY car at ANY service center I've gotten that level of communication. I love it and wish it was the norm.
While it is a bit worrisome to have an issue before even taking delivery, I can say that the SLC service center team has provided an excellent customer service experience. Fingers crossed they're able to remedy whatever it is soon.
As for the loaner, it's a launch edition R1S in launch green with a green interior. It's A LOT of green. And I don't particularly like green ha ha ha. That said, even though it's not my preference I don't mind launch green. I like that it's a bit more muted.
A few thoughts I've had after doing a lot of miles over the weekend:
-Spatial Audio is life changing. LOVE
-Amazing how smooth everything is but:
-I was pretty quickly reminded why people complain about gen 1 r1s suspension. Not rough. But VERY rebound heavy over repeated bumps. Big yikes. Wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but curious how much different gen 2 will be.
-driver + is much better with stability and situational awareness than Ford BC 1.0, not quite as good as Tesla. But WHY do I have to take over at an interchange where I'm staying in the same lane on the same road??
-LOVE that the charging port locks L2 plugs. Why doesn't everyone do this??
-visualization on screen is hilariously bad compared to Tesla. Curious how gen 2 fares
-Rivian UI sounds are THE BEST.
Overall a bunch of nitpicky tiny stuff because the vehicle as a whole is incredible. Love love love this thing. Can't wait to get mine
When I get mine I will be sure to provide my take on some of the differences. After putting a few hundred miles on the launch edition I will probably be able to spot quite a few
