Possibly the most expensive charging session ever

It seems to be to be one of three things:

1. It's a dual charger set up and someone was charging in the spot to the right. The Rivian was desperate for a charge so they parked in the handicap spot to plug in.

2. It's a single charger set up and, same as above, it was an emergency situation so the Rivian parked in the handicap spot.

3. The Rivian driver is a jerk and decided to park in the handicap spot even though they didn't need to and threw caution to the wind.

I think the 3rd is the least likely option.

Only the 3rd one applies. Double charger and there was a free spot. Not paying attention but they did have the the time to back in and get the rear tires over the concrete curb stop, open the app and plug in. The funny thing is that by backing in, they made the painted handicapped sign on the ground super visible.

They are not going to get out of a ticket. Despite where the charging post was placed, that was not a designated EV charging spot. It is clearly marked "Only" on the handicap sign.

Best practice is to take any other non-accessible spot first.

Is there something out of frame that made you think you were supposed to park in the handicap spot?

There are a bunch of scenarios here that could have resulted in parking the way they did. The question is, you pull up to a charging location and all spots are taken except for the HD charging stall. Do you wait or charge. Some places have HD charging stalls and some do not. Some have van accessible stall plus a regular HD stall. I used a Tesla charger that required me to take up some of the HD hashed area. I stayed with my truck in case somebody came along that needed the room. I would have moved if this happened.

The issue with the parking spot is that whoever installed the double charger placed it one spot too far. It should have been centered between the 2 spots next to the handicapped spot. However, it is clearly marked on the ground as well as the signpost. I almost did the same thing months ago.

Did you get a look at the back of the Rivian? Perhaps their license plate is a handicap plate, and both you and the ticket provider missed that due to their bumper parking job. Or maybe they forgot to hang their handicap placard?

Y'all are so quick to jump on the "what an asshole" train, somehow that's more believable than someone is 1. handicap 2. forgetful & 3. Drives a Rivian, or perhaps so busy helping their wheelchair-bound grandma they forgot to hang the placard.

Nothing but a regular plate on the back. This spot is in Aliso Wood Canyon wilderness. Make your own conclusions.

You are all incorrect, lol. You cannot have conventional EV charge spaces and then not have an ADA compliant EV parking space for a disabled person to also charge. Though both plugs are allowed to reach conventional spaces, one must be ada accessible. Here's an example where that is implemented. The post reaches two normal stalls and an ADA one:

Those are also actual handicap spaces. My point was just that accessible spaces are required at public charging. Just like accessible tables and restrooms are available at restaurants. It's not banned to sit there but the venue must have them. Some charging sites are retrofit on existing lots so making an ADA space reachable by a plug is the way to go.

You're point on the law is the best of all worlds where full utilization can happen.

A minimum fine of $250 for the handicap parking error but I think it could be up to $500 if it's a first offense, then one can hope for a "fix it" for no front plate but I believe it could be a $196 fine plus court costs.

People make choices and often it depending on morals and income level.

On the other hand, maybe they left their placard in their other car, and proof of said placard would probably get the ticket dismissed. Additionally, the front plate and holder might have fallen off and they reported it lost/stolen, which again would get the ticket dismissed. ?
