The risk of using your car as a battery during a major disaster is that you don't know how long the power will be out for. If it's out for a very long time, you will end up with spoiled food and you'll be trapped because your car is dead. This is why I have an emergency generator with gallons and gallons of gas on-standby. To empower my EV to get the hell out of Dodge!

What happens when the gas runs out?

After 60 hours the power is back on.

My conclusion? It was great to use but it’s a shame that the Rivian is limited to 1500w max combined output. You just can’t run much stuff at onetime. I’ll have to keep supplementing with a generator but it’s nice to know the Rivian can run essentials for a week no problem.

For comparison, Ford Lighting has 7200w output. I’m not sure about Cybertruck, but I know it has 2 120V and a 240V.

I was pretty surprised they didnt increase this as part of the Gen 2 refresh (nor fix the shitty audio system) - Seems like low hanging fruit

It is indeed a shame. Especially when you have the Lightning that walks circles around Rivian in the outlet department. One would think that Rivian would have upped their game in this area.

We powered all the power tools for when remodeling a vacation home recently and it was remarkable. It really puts Rivian to shame. Not saying that a Rivian is that type of work truck, but 1500w is petty.

Even an IONIQ 5 can handle 16A from its outlets including the V2L.

Ditto. It's beyond me that Rivian over looked the two areas that actually matter, a lot. The audio is so crap that it's embarrassing.

I believe R2 and R3 platforms have higher accessory output, correct? At least we have that to look forward to.

This seems appropriate to post here. I purchased one of these in order to backfeed my home in a power outage.

Jackery Portable Power Station, 2000 Plus
https://a.co/d/4SRmLFA

Some key points:
1. you will need to get the backfeed switch (also called transfer switch) installed at your house to do this right. But once that is in you can power your house with only one 30A cable from the battery to the transfer switch.
2. It has 3000W max to reasonably use most appliances
3. You can add to that max wattage (up to 6000W) by buying more Jackery hardware
4. Possibly most important and the real key to this whole idea…these Jackery units support pass-through charging (cheaper ones often do not) which means you can have this thing powering your home WHILE charging it with the truck, and it won’t ruin the battery quickly. So the 135kWh truck is added to the 2kW Jackery battery

I’m done screwing around with gas generators that have to be outside to run but also can’t get rained or snowed on

Interesting concept, but if the Jackery 2000 Plus is pulling let’s say 2000 watts, and my Rivian can only output 1500, the Jackery won’t last too long before it outruns the power of the Rivian and dies. The Rivian wouldn’t be able to keep up with the load. I’d have to turn everything off, let the Jackery recharge and then turn it back on. I’d have to have multiple Jackery 2000’s, swapping between and charging them up As they died.

My portable A/C and fridge alone are pulling about 1600 watts, add in a few fans and devices and I’m at 2000+ really quick.

AC and fridge are not 100% duty cycle.

I can assure you that the R1T won’t power my portable a/c and fridge at the same time. Trips the breaker. So together they are pulling more than 1500 watts. I believe they would eventually drain the jackery 2000 before it could be recharged. Rivian just couldn’t keep up, unless I had multiple units to swap and charge.

I’m leaning towards a $1500 NAtural gas generator that outputs 9500 watts unless I can find a comparable electric solution.

I think what @docwhiz was trying to say is that the AC and fridge don't ordinarily run continuously at peak load. You should be able to set either, or both, to a temperature that doesn't require continuous operation.

If what's tripping your R1T is the peak load, @FutureTruck, a higher-output battery pack could potentially have capacity for the peak load. Then your R1T only has to push the lower average current in order to make it sustainable to operate the power pack.

I hope I understand the technical aspects adequately. Is this what you were saying, @docwhiz?

Thanks to both!

Yeah the EV9 can do 3600W. Lots of reports of EV9s running multiple fridges, internet, lights etc for 6-7 days with 50% power still left.

Awesome to see these electric cars save the day!
