Hmm, I will say I have zero issues with my recently delivered Gen2 R1T with my Tesla wall charger and the A2Z adapter. Could be the adapter?

Have you tried putting the Tesla HPWC in Compatibility Mode?
How does that work, is that even an option for the (several year old with NACS connector only) gen3 charger? I don’t remember seeing anything in the web UI.

Yes for Gen 3 chargers. It's an option in the UI in both the Tesla App and when you login via IP. It is specifically meant for situations where you are getting charging errors with a non-Tesla EV.

My guess is the adapter is causing the issue, but this might save you from buying the A2Z adapter.

Lmao. I did want a CT. You got me there. Has nothing to do with Elon though. He lives rent free in your liberal head, not mine.
I couldn’t care less about Elon as a person. I only clown on the cybertruck because it’s so easily mocked. It doesn’t trigger me, I don’t like it because I expect my cars to have stuff like style. If I’m a liberal because I don’t want to drive in a refrigerator with wheels oh well.

Welcome to my side, friend.

Update: enabling compatibility mode on the tesla HPWC seems to have helped. Too early to say if it sticks. I’ve never had to do this to charge a non-Tesla EV before, including other Rivians.

A2Z actually responded to a comment I made on their FB page about the throttling. They know about it and said it’s only Rivian’s that do it lol. Figures. The thermals of the battery are as advertised- shitty. I swapped my trust g3 wall charger with a Tesla Universal that comes with a built in adapter. So far so good. But I did turn down the amps on the Rivian to 32a and it’s fine so far.

Thermals of the battery has very little to do with slow L2 charging.

Then why does it get so damn loud when it’s charging at full 48a? My Tesla is pretty damn quiet

I was gonna say you should google these things and it should be easy to find, but I tried a quick search myself and it's not readily apparent in the first few results so that sucks. Glad that compatibility setting seems to resolve the issues. Not great that it took so much effort and community effort to get you there.

^^this - 48A is a trickle charge for batteries this big.

Sounds to me like there's something up with your vehicle. I've done overnight charges on 3 gen 1 Rivians and my own gen 2 all at 48a. None of them make a peep.

That being said, gen 1 vehicles are very susceptible to hot pins in the charge port. I did experience a temporary throttle one time on one of the gen 1 vehicles because of this when the garage ambient temp was in the 90s.

If you're using an adapter I could see that generating enough heat to trigger the pin over temp issue on Gen 1

But none of these are the issue the OP is having. Purely a communication error with the Tesla wall connector. Why? IDK. Probably something Rivian could address with a software update. But until then, Tesla wall connector compatibility mode should work just fine

It’s not my vehicle. A2Z confirmed it’s just Rivian’s that do this with their adapter. After almost an hour it throttles. I can pull the plug out , put it back in and bam full 11kw again. Multiple people have this exact issue

I get the same error fairly frequently (~50%) charging at home on a ChargePoint J1772 charger (40 amps) with my Gen2 R1T. Funny thing is that it often completes the charge anyway.

Could there be a difference charging at 40 amps vs 32 amps? What do the Tesla home chargers output?
