So, just a question here: what happens when the JV delivers AA/CP to Scout Motors? Where will Wasyym team be standing then?
For a company to struggle with sales yet firmly decide against a feature yet pour resources to copy this very AA/CP integrations poorly into their UI, seems misguided.
Liking or hating AA/CP is not the point. Removing all buyer friction is. Every time I read or watch a Rivian review, they mention this miss. That is not the advertising Rivian needs.
Or, is this the hill to stand and fight for the future of the company?

Well, Ford has carplay and they've shut down the F-150 Lightning plant for 2 months due to lack of sales.

Where does VW stand since they don't offer a 2 door coupe with 500+ hp but Porsche does? Connected but different companies, different markets. From a JV perspective, I think it's irrelevant that Scout will offer CP and Rivian doesn't.

Market research has shown only approximately 1 in 3 buyers demand Carplay/ AA. It’s not as popular as you make it sound. I would suggest that number is actually going down, not up.

I'm tweaking my 3D printed CarPlay mount right now, waiting for a new roll of carbon fiber filament to arrive. I had CarPlay for years, then didn't. Hated not having it but worked with it. I got an add-on CP unit and liked it a lot, but then took it out to see if I'd miss it. Yes, the Rivian UI is still ridiculously 1990 when it comes to phone integration, so it's back in the car and will be forever.

Perfection is important to me so I'm going through a few iterations. I want it up slightly high and on the left end of the main display.

It has involved some minor injury fishing the cables inside the (sharp) dashboard.

I don’t know how disingenuous it is. My wife’s BMW has CarPlay and it sucks. I have used it in several cars now and have walked away unimpressed each time. It’s better than most legacy autos but that’s like saying it’s the tallest midget or the slimmest bariatric patient.

A far better solution is manufacturer software that works. Then again I don’t need or care about to the minute traffic updates. The routing on Apple Maps has made more mistakes for me than Rivian’s lately so I don’t think it’s necessarily better either.

tl;dr I know for certain how to use CarPlay yet came to the same conclusion
I haven't used Car Play in a BMW, so I don't have any first hand experience. That said, instead of telling me it sucks, how about telling me why it sucks. What exactly makes your Car Play experience so poor in a BMW? What doesn't work well?

And you say it sucks, but then you also say it's better than most legacy autos? Are you talking about their built-in systems? You like Car Play more than native entertainment/navigation systems in legacy autos? Hmm....

I love CarPlay. I have wireless CarPlay in every vehicle. I might add a second screen to Rivian. Just not sure how well second screen works. How do you activate voice commands? Can you have multiple phones linked automatically depending on which driver jumps in vehicle

If CarPlay is as great as it is made out to be, there is supposed to be essentially zero difference between using CP and the iPhone. Under that premise as touted by Apple, if he uses an iPhone, your comment that "he has no clue whatsoever" doesn't make much sense - unless you are stating that he has no clue on how to use an iPhone, which is pretty presumptuous.
Have you ever used Car Play? It's not the same as using an iPhone. In fact, the whole idea of Car Play is that you aren't using your phone at all. You're using your vehicle to access functionality of the apps on your phone.

The fact that they guy didn't even know that Car Play is implemented differently between vehicle makes just proves my point entirely. Otherwise, he wouldn't have posted a story about hopping into a rental car and experiencing Car Play for the first time and then making a blanket statement that it sucks. That's laughable at best....

Agreed. If Scout does offer CP/AA, it will be a huge advantage over Rivian. Time and time again, we see that there are many buyers who refuse to purchase a new vehicle that doesn't offer CP/AA. So any company refusing to implement it will most definitely be missing out on sales. That's 100% fact and it's not debatable.

I came from a Ridgeline, which I loved ( until I started driving an R1T). Initially planned on another Ridge, I couldn't possibly swap to Rivian, it has no Android Auto and the back glass doesn't even open!! A test drive and a purchase later, I miss none of those things. Wish I would have made the change sooner!

I've installed a lot of things in a lot of cars. The Rivian's internal plastic parts are the sharpest I've ever encountered. Weird.

One thing that should be considered on whether CP sucks or not, is that it simply sucks a lot less than not having it. I won't even opine on how much CP could be improved (ok I will...a lot), but the exeperience without it is horrible. It's 2024 and I can't reply to a text message using in-car commands? Doesn't that seem really ridiculous?

My R1T has been in the service center for two weeks now so I’ve had a Jeep Wagoneer for a rental and it comes with CarPlay. After finally getting to play with and learn CarPlay, I have to say that CarPlay is a huge NO for me. I significantly prefer the maps that Rivian provides and just use Waze on my phone. And Spotify is FAR superior on the Rivian’s system than through CarPlay. I cannot wait to get my R1T back (may even check with Enterprise to see if they have an R1S in stock that I can get). So please, stop requesting that Rivian use or implement CarPlay.
Amen and amen. Every time I hop in a rental vehicle and am forced to use the half-a$$ed CarPlay interface (most recently the Audi version for a week) I am reminded of just how awful it is. I love all things Apple but CP blows and I am sooooo glad Rivian is going its own way.
