FWIW, In looking at some of the articles on this, I found the following related to GM's decision to dump CarPlay (from 9to5 Mac May 2024):

Apple no longer merely wanted to project a copy of iOS onto the infotainment screen; it wanted the iPhone to oversee the mission-critical cluster behind the steering wheel. This stuff was sacrosanct in Detroit. GM’s Wexler says the next-gen CarPlay, which GM learned of before the announcement, was a “major factor” in its ensuing decision to divorce Apple.

If correct, it explains a lot about why Rivian and GM and Tesla say CP is not coming/coming back.

That's quite a guarantee... backed by zero actual evidence :CWL: Just because market research found 1 in 3 demand it does not mean if they offered it their sales would be higher. Not even sure why that needs to be explained.

How do you explain other manufacturers who do offer it also struggling with sales? Can you "guarantee" their sales are 1/3 higher than they would otherwise be if they didn't?
Actually, it is 1 in 3 demand AA/CP but 98% use AA/CP if they have it.

Those other car mfgs with struggling sales, are they struggling BECAUSE they had AA/CP or a struggling LESS because at least they have AA/CP?

Can we make a statement that AA/CP helps or hurts a vehicle purchase?
We know that Rivian and Tesla do not have AA/CP representing the minority of car buyers but a substantial percentage of the premium BEV full-size market. We also know that Kia's EV9, Lucid, Chevy, GM, BMW & Porsche include native AA/CP. We also know that VW has it for their cars so it is likely that Scout will have AA/CP too.

Like I said, distractions are everywhere. Knowing how to deal with them is key. When driving situations DEMAND 100% of my focus, then that's what I'll do. I do have a stellar driving record and only one accident in my life, which happened to be getting rear ended while stopped at a traffic light. I think the driver of the other vehicle must have been distracted by his Car Play. LOL
It's amazing that you have to type that out for a supposed adult capable of driving. On top of the obvious choice of when it's safe or not, the blanket claim about distractions ignores neuro-divergent peoples' needs for different interaction. Like so many things in life, people who are incapable of doing something or making good choices assume that nobody else is either.

I would say that no, we cannot make that statement either way. Without data on how much it costs a company to implement and maintain it as a feature, or how many of their sales were directly related to it we can't say for sure. Likewise we can't say how much the other companies save by not adding it, or how many sales they lose by not offering it.

I love how you just made the same type of statement you are also whining about. Stating a fact proven by research - that CarPlay is a distraction like other distractions does not mean those who don't like it are "incapable of making good choices"...

Talk about projection?

I find Rivian’s in-board software so bad I bought two addon screens for CarPlay (for both Rivians), and when I found better ones, I replaced them. Even if Rivian software were decent, there is the “overload” aspect. I run hard and fast 16 hours a day, double booked. I don’t need yet another UI and set of settings in my cars. It’s just a hassle, and it all adds up. I have enough to deal with as it is. Simplify your life! In fact I don’t know why I’m still on this forum. Therapy, I think, when I encounter mediocrity. Sometimes you just have to vent.

Rivian's Chief Software Officer, Wassym Bensaid, on why Rivian chose NOT to use Carplay: He made this comments earlier this week.

"...we truly believe that with the technology capabilities that we have, we can offer a much more refined integrated experience, not just between in the infotainment screen but then all the vehicle controls- the way the vehicle drives, the way the vehicle does energy management, battery management and I think going the Carplay route would have been laziness from us because it would have basically resulted in Rivian not doing things first principle and defining our own way in terms of proposing something really unique to customers. This makes me confident that future VW products may not have Apple Carplay as future VW products will be built on Rivian's OS.”

So, it’s not just about CarPlay and the functionality it offers it’s about other interactions with the vehicle as well. I would love to understand more about this but just sharing what he said.

Tesla's infotainment system is far ahead of Rivian and in my opinion anything CarPlay offers. Is it a one-to-one match in terms of features with CarPlay, no. Is it a better experience, I believe so.

CarPlay is more than Maps. Personally I find the Rivian maps are fine for what I need them for about the same as Apple/Google/Waze/etc. It's everything else Carplay/AA offers that make it worth it. Remember you don't have to use CarPlay, it is a choice like opening your windows on a nice breezy drive.

I know Rivian won't do it but it would be a nice option.

Not true, I own a Ford and a GM that have these features plus CP. In fact, except for Apple Music, the GM Android Automotive system has way more streaming music services available than Rivian. It also has built in capability to download Waze, ABRP, weather radar and many other useful apps.
Agree - this is why GM new system is not bad at all, and on paired with car play/android auto. But it is basically android auto embedded, with application store, etc. So when people say GM abandoned AA/CP - it is not 100% true - they just integrated the platform into entertainment.

I agree that CP is far more than maps; in fact there is so much more that is more important to me. And the Rivian maps mostly function ok. Where they fail totally is in awareness of the latest issues on roads. Traffic, closures, and things like that. It's a total failure every single time. Days or weeks behind.

Oh yeah, the "OMG DISTRACTION" people should take note that being faced with road surprises is dangerous as hell, compared to talking to Siri about a re-route option.

Vehicle integrations with carplay are universally garbage.

My R1T has been in the service center for two weeks now so I’ve had a Jeep Wagoneer for a rental and it comes with CarPlay. After finally getting to play with and learn CarPlay, I have to say that CarPlay is a huge NO for me. I significantly prefer the maps that Rivian provides and just use Waze on my phone. And Spotify is FAR superior on the Rivian’s system than through CarPlay. I cannot wait to get my R1T back (may even check with Enterprise to see if they have an R1S in stock that I can get). So please, stop requesting that Rivian use or implement CarPlay.
What the hell is this carplay thing, anyway?
