My Gen 1 R1S is still on 2024.43.01 so I did a chat with support and after reviewing their data they said the update wasn’t being offered because I was connected to 5GHz WiFi. Has anyone heard of this? It doesn’t make sense to me. I setup a WiFi extender with a 2.4GHz network to see if the update shows up.

If your WiFi network has dual bands, the R1 should find the 2.4 gHz and you’re fine.

If it doesn’t, then your network is apparently prioritizing the 5 gHz band and your R1 isn’t being exposed to the 2.4 gHz signal.

If there is a setting on your network software to shut off the 5 GHz (temporarily, of course), then do that and see if the R1 latches on. After that, it should do so automatically (I guess unless you do a full reset on the R1).

What I saw is sometimes it connected to 2.4GHz and sometimes 5GHz depending on which base station it connected to. I have an Orbi with 4 satellites so how it connects seems to vary. I now I have a separate network with separate SSIDs for each frequency. So far nothing has happened maybe it’ll get identified over night and have the update pushed.

This is the way.

There are quite a few IOT type devices that only support 2.4 and don't work properly on dual band single SSID WIFI.

For what it’s worth my R1S works on 5GHz as Spotify runs without issue. The support agent said it’s a policy choice to not send the update via 5 GHz.

I have Orbi’s (older version) that I had to work this issue with another product. My Rivian has not had a problem. I broadcast the same SSID on both 2.4 and 5 GHz. On the Orbi I can’t turn the 5 GHz band off in any settings I could find but digging in the technical documentation I discovered it was possible to lower the power emitted by 75%. You might try this to make the 2.4 GHz band stronger and preferred. But I am with the others. With 5 GHz becoming more of the standard I would expect a $100K truck to work on that band.

No need to support it really. 2.4 isn't going anywhere and has a better range than 5 or 6 GHz. That said, 5 GHz seems to be supported as reported by other owners.

And the setting you are looking for is likely called 'band steering'.

Ya I'm sorry, your agent didn't know what they were talking about. Maybe as said above they mixed up 5G cellular and 5ghz Wi-Fi or something but I also have only a 5ghz network at my house (due to all my neighbors having tons of 2.4 clogging up the bands) and everything works fine on 5ghz.

Two days later no update so i contacted support again and got a different answer. This time they said my vehicle just hadn’t been offered yet and that the WiFi configuration didn’t matter. it seems like the first agent had no idea what they were talking about.
