It seems that most cars now automatically lock the doors when you put the vehicle into drive and I hate it. It isn't the fact that the doors are locked, it is the noise that it the locks make that drives me nuts.

Has anyone who has gone on a test drive noticed how the door locks work? Do they make noise? I'm not talking about the chirp/horn broadcasting that the lock signal was received. Does the actual locking mechanism make a noise that you can hear inside the vehicle? And does it automatically engage when you put the vehicle in drive?

One of my favorite Tesla features is the fact that the door locks are absolutely silent because there are no moving parts. The "lock", it is just a software function; if the doors are locked the car just ignores input from the open door button.

Most cars don’t automatically lock when going in to gear, it’s usually above a certain speed.

page 11 says the doors lock when you go in to drive. Which makes sense as that means the exterior handles retract. Also says if the door handle is locked, pull twice on the interior handle to open. So that’s the same as normal cars. The door handles are mechanical.

i can’t say I’ve ever noticed the sound of any speed activated door locking in any car I’ve had that does that.

I notice it in most cars, but it doesn't bother me. The usual car's blinker sound though - ugh, I detest that (standard ops for BMW drivers I understand).

Another door lock question: do we know if the doors lock automatically as you walk away from the vehicle? My current car has been doing that for the last 5 years and I just know I'll constantly forget to lock my next car if it doesn't do the same

BMWs don’t even have turn signals

According to the manual, yes, the vehicle will automatically lock if you're using your phone or physical FOB as your key and you walk away. The vehicle doesn't automatically lock if you're using the keycard or wrist band.

I'm hoping locks are mechanical, though I don't care if they make a sound or not. Enough vehicles have random electrical gremlins nowadays, I really don't want to have to pull the emergency release in the trunk to get out.

Man.... And I thought my first world problems were bad. I've never even considered the horrors of the half-second locking sound!
Now when your car goes faster than 24km/h it’ll be all you can hear(assuming you have automatic locking turned on in the OBC)

Don't worry, there is nothing to pull. It's a button you press.
