Gen2 R1T Charge cable doesn't like to release

Hello Folks!

I brought home a Gen2 R1T on Dec 24th, and I've been having an issue w/the charge that I wanted to check on here before I put in a service request.

I have the truck set to NOT lock the doors at home. If I walk up to the truck, press the latch on the charge handle, it doesn't unlock from the truck. Pressing the 'eject' button by the charger doesn't seem to work either. The only way to get it disconnected is to toggle the lock / unlock in the app, to get it to release.

For reference, this is my 5th EV, and it's on a clippercreek home charger that I know is working correctly on my wives XC40 Recharge.

Any insight?

My Rivian works the exact same way. I have to lock and then unlock the car. Then I have to manually close the refueling door. My wife's Audi does it the right way by detaching without having to do the lock/unlock thing. The Audi even automatically closes the refueling door when the hose is removed...smart!

My Gen 1 stops charging and releases the handle when I press the button. No lock/unlock cycle needed.

And we used to have the auto-close on disconnect feature, but the chomp-chomp was removed a year or so ago. Now it will only auto close when taking it out of park.

My understanding is that the R1's (both generations) are designed to hold onto the charger plug until the vehicle is unlocked.

That feature makes charger/adapter theft much more difficult. I prefer it that way! Showing the car that I have the right to unplug it is a good move -- when proximity unlocking is working correctly.

If proximity unlocking worked as intended 100% of the time, this might be a non-issue.

I'm pretty sure that's NOT working as designed, @beardley. That would be very frustrating for me.

Super, thanks for confirming! I didn't think this was proper behavior, but new companies sometimes do weird things

@beardley Stupid question, when you go to unplug, do you have your phone key with you with the app running? Looks like you must have if you were manually unlocking through the app.

Next question. Is your phone an older model? My wife’s IPhone 11 does not connect as a phone key (via Bluetooth) to our Rivian or Tesla nearly as well as my 15. She often has to unlock through the app, rather than proximity through Bluetooth.

Some things to check - my bet is an issue with phone key proximity via Bluetooth.

Yes, phone key in hand for sure. It has no issue locking / unlocking with proximity setting.

iPhone 15 pro max, and like I said no issues with the proximity functions. It unlocks when I walk up to it away from home, and locks when I walk away.

And to confirm, I have the truck set to NOT lock at home, because it was unlocking/locking repeatedly while I was doing some yard work and I live in the middle of nowhere, where locking cars at home is uncommon

So even when the truck is unlocked, I have to open the app, toggle the lock on, back off and sometime a 2nd or 3rd time to get the charge handle to release. I'm 99.99% convinced this is a hardware issue. The last thing I need to do before scheduling a service visit is I want to get out the mobile charger and test with that, just to confirm it's not an issue w/the charger handle where the locking pin slides in. It's a clippercreek unit that I installed in 2016, so it's seen some miles. That said I have no issues with my wifes XC40 recharge, or her prius before that.

@beardley Give the mobile charger a try for sure. My old Id.4 used to do this, and I’d have to hit unlock on the fob 2-3 times, which is basically what you’re describing, albeit using the app is more clunky. Can you hear anything when the latch engages/disengages?
