Hey guys -

New Rivian R1S owner but long time EV owner (have had a Mach-E with Bluecruise as our only family car for over 2 years) here.

Have overall enjoyed the Rivian but after two weeks coming to the conclusion that the ADAS system is at-best unreliable and frankly borderline dangerous.

First, every time I get in the car it’s basically sensor error Roulette - about 1 in 4 drives I get sensor errors and it’s rarely even the same sensors (adaptive headlights, collision avoidance system, parking sensors) so I can’t even repeat the behavior. As a point of comparison, I’m not sure my Mach-E has ever thrown a single sensor error in over two years.

Second, the behavior of the Highway Assist system makes no sense. I’ve only been able to successfully continuously use it for 2-3 miles at which point it erroneously identified an overpass as a “tunnel” beeped at me to take control (my hands were already firmly on the wheel) then suddenly decided to hard brake down to 55 on a 65 mph highway with traffic going 75 mph. It then told me it was unavailable for the rest of the drive. The next time I tried to use it I couldn’t because the front collision avoidance system had an error.

Is anyone else having similar experiences? The most annoying thing is that all the errors clear after any reset but at this point in two weeks I’ve reset the car probably 3x as many times as I have my Mach-E in over 2 years

I have a Gen 1 and rarely use Driver+, but it sounds to me like you should have them look at it. The Gen 1 system will give sensor errors once in a while, but this sounds excessive. From what I have read, Bluecruise is likely still better than Rivian’s Gen 2 ADAS, but it seems like yours is not working properly.

I haven't had these sort of experiences. I only get repeated sensor errors when driving in a snow storm, which makes sense as the snow blocks the sensor. That was true for my gen 1 as well.

It sounds like it's not working properly. I don't use it daily, but I do a long drive every 2 - 4 weeks where I use it for 75 to 100 miles. I don't have these issues (Gen 1).

I had issues with the ultrasonic sensors on my gen1 R1T. This caused all sorts of issues including not being able to use any driver assistance features on longer drives. The service center replaced and recalibrated them a few months ago and been problem free since. Have the service center give it a look.

Try a hard reset my Gen1 had this error a few days ago and the reset fixed it.

The Rivian ADAS is less mature than BlueCruise, Super Cruise, or Tesla Autopilot. Your expectations should be calibrated accordingly.

However, what you report is not correct behavior. The 75 mph —> 55 mph seems to indicate it either “saw” a 55 mph sign or the mapping data believes there is a reduction to 55 mph in that area. If you retravel that stretch and the same thing happens, that could be the issue.

I routinely drive a section of Interstate with intermittent construction zones, and often the 55 mph signs are present even though traffic is flowing 65-85 mph and there are no workers. It’s jarring to have the truck suddenly decelerate when it spots the temp 55 sign, but it’s doing its job.

As suggested elsewhere, try a hard reset when you have 30 min to spend on the R1 in your driveway and see if that cures it.

We also have a Mach-E as our other vehicle. While we haven’t had any of the sensor issues on the Rivian you have, I can say that current BlueCruise is much better than the current state of Rivian’s system. It covers more roads, doesn’t disengage as frequently, feels much smoother, and generally feels safer. Keeping my fingers crossed that Rivian will get lots of updates this year.

I found the Driver+ on my 2022 R1T to be pretty uninspiring, moderately better than Eyesight on the Subaru that it replaced but not great and I rarely used it. Upon moving to the Gen2 R1S I've found it pretty good. I drove a shade over 2000 miles RT over the holidays and used Driver+ for about half of that rolling up and down I-5. Seemed to hold speed well and the lane change works great now vs. having to disengage/reengage in the Gen1.

There were some disengagements in areas with construction and harder-to-identify lane markers, but I didn't have any problems with unexpected braking. I did have quite a few sensor warnings on the way home, a few hundred miles of heavy rain caused the sensors in the bumper to throw errors about being blocked every 15 minutes and I eventually gave up on Driver+ until the weather improved.

The matrix headlights and improved ADAS keep me thinking about replacing my Gen 1. Otherwise, I am happy as can be.

I must concur with the OP that ADAS at least in my early VIN gen 1 is dangerous as I've had it 3 times in the last 3 months without any kind of warning pull abruptly left as if it's making a 45 degree turn. All instances occurred on the freeway, leftmost lane, turned left each time, no warnings or disengagement. Had I not been paying attention I would have ended up in the Jersey barrier. I know I should have the service center look at it but I really don't use it much and given my last SC visit I don't want my truck sitting around waiting to be looked at while I suffer with an ICE rental. LOL.

You may have a sensor issue. I used Driver+ during a 6-hour drive with no issues.
Agreed, I just did a 500 mile back and forth to Tampa with Driver+ @ 75 for 99% of it. Only turn off for construction zones (all those lines old and new everywhere) and non highway. Takes a lot of mental overhead off highway driving and reduces fatigue. Have about 4-5k of highway on driver+ and it's a keeper compared to plain old normal driving.

Can't compare to any other branded driver assists, but seems like they're all similar in execution.

Try a hard reset. If not resolved, contact service.

I use highway assist 1-2x week on the 405 in L.A. and while it's not perfect, it works pretty well. Having said that, I wouldn't set it to 84 mph and let it rip on curvy roads.
