I'm not advocating using these parts as I don't know the quality of these but Rockauto has 3rd party pads and rotors. For $300 for the full set of rotors and pads or a set of pads for less than $100 I'd DIY those even if they only lasted 1/2 the life of OE ones.

Looking back, to 7 months ago, it seems mostly 2022 builds complaining. Whether it's software function of when to apply friction brakes or just early builds / higher mileage folks hitting the threshold is debatable. Either way, I'm feeling better about declining brake service and DIY it. Mostly I want to ensure the pins and ears are greased properly to prevent future uneven wear.
Would be great if you can tell us about your DIY experience once you do it (if you go that route).

I'll need to do mine soon, pads and rotors. Rotors mostly in the rear due to corrosion on the outside surface due to that pad never engaging the rotor.

2 hour ride to my local SC.

It would take me under an hour to do all of this (4 sets of pads and rotors) on my own. Just need the software to allow me to do a brake job. I was going to go with the Rock Auto parts.

It would be nice to have a customer service mode where you can toggle a "service mode" for each caliper independently. That'll get over the issue of trucks rolling away while jacked or before they get jacked up.

My old 2004 Tacoma would have calipers seize every 3 years like clockwork, lubed pins or not. Got so good I could start from a whole truck and do a corner with a new rotor, pads, and caliper in under 20 minutes, including bleeding the lines. New England + heated garage = brakes that hate you.

Parts: twice what I expected, you can find plenty of "performance" quality pads at half the price
Labor: For a Rivian, I can see just shy of 2 hours. It would take me at least that long DIY. Their labor rates are on par so I'll allow it
Taxes: I hate Seattle...

Thoughts?
My Mini Cooper Countryman All4 was much more than that a few years ago. My Ford Transit 350 van was also.

Was this necessary? I didn't need to replace the brakes on my wife's Prius until 160,000 miles. In the last 61,000, I've braked less than 10 times in the Rivian.

Interestingly I've just had the same thing happen to me, 2022 R1T 4xxx VIN, ~70k km (43k miles), brake assist for regen on, 30% highway assist

Car's in the service centre to get the front jounce line upgrade, and the tech mentioned all 4 wheels have inner pads down to 2mm and outer pads at 8mm. Reason they gave for the uneven wear was mud caked on them. Then they recommended rotor/brake replacements (all in Canadian dollars)

For the rear rotors replacement with pads is - $815.32 plus taxes
For the rear pads only - $269 plus taxes

For the front rotors replacement with pads is - $1073.74 plus taxes
For the front pads only - $493.71 plus taxes

I drive on PNW dirt roads occasionally, but I'm skeptical that dirt roads alone can cause ~6mm of wear difference between inner and outer pads on all wheels.

It's a more reasonable explanation on the rear floating calipers, that maybe the guide pins are gummed up. Floating calipers only have pistons on the inner side, and the outer pad is supposed to wear evenly but never really does. (idk the exact details but the point is there aren't pistons on the outer side)

It doesn't make sense for the front calipers. The front callipers have 6 pistons, 3 on the outer pad and 3 on the inner pad for theoretically at least, perfectly even wear...??

From this thread it sounds like it's the brake assist regen setting and/or a 2022 build era unlubed pin situation... I might push a bit harder to get the pad work warrantied but it sounds like I gotta take the bullet and hope they grease it properly this time? hard to say without automotive experience (never done brakes myself before, cause losing brakes after a DIY job in an ICE seems pretty bad)

Those rear rotors look rough! That's surface rust, right? You can see where the pad was getting stuck to the rotor.

IRT brake assist Regen setting, I tried it when it first came out and didn't like it, so kept it off. I'm attributing to ungreased pins from the factory. Mine are not only worn on the inside, but unevenly worn front to back. Like the pad is diagonal, I'll dig up a pic or crawl under and take one.

Now that you mention it, my front inner brake pad looks more worn towards the bottom of the picture than the top. Or it could be the camera angle. I'm gonna bring this up with the service centre on Monday.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked to see that much rust on the rear rotors. That imprint is probably from the brake pad binding to the rotor overnight; I often hear a little clunk as the parking pad unbinds every morning.

SC said it was surface-level rust. Assuming the rear friction brakes are getting used by software, it looks like my rear outer brake pad is applying very little force based on the rust buildup on that rotor. Makes me hesitant to drop $800 on new brake pads just for this to happen again when the diagnostic from the SC is "mud buildup".

Although the pads don't wear out that fast, it may still be necessary for us to have them serviced due to age. The rear floating caliper will definitely need the slide pins maintained with brake grease especially for those of you in foul weather regions. The front fixed calipers could also hang up the pads in the mounting pins and clips if lots of debris or rust gets in. If they hang up they can wear uneven.

My Toyota years made evident that some brakes are really sensitive to this. Proper maintenance or installation helps a lot both in uneven wear and performance. Best was to take them apart, clean and lubricate before putting back together. Once you get vibration, it's too late.
