What happens to vehicles returned during Rivian's 7 day return policy window?

Does anyone know what Rivian will do with vehicles that are returned within the 7-day satisfaction window?

Wondering if Rivian might make these available for sale to non-reservation holders.

If they do resell them, that would be a way to jump the line.

If Cox is the reseller it will be interesting to see whether they put a markup on them.

I guess we'll find out.

I’d guess loaner fleet and/or showroom demos. Rotate old loaners out as a source of good, low-mileage used inventory. Maybe even offer a CPO program.

I don’t expect many to actually exercise the return option. A token few, only.

They also could use them as service vehicles.

To be honest, I would be surprised if anyone actually does this and if so the number would be extremely small.

I would never spend 80K on a vehicle if I thought there was even a remote possibility I might return it.

I doubt many launch edition vehicles get returned, but once we get to the point that you can order the vehicle and expect delivery a few weeks later, I predict that there will be a ton of returns and Rivian will end up ending the return policy because of volume of returns.

Never underestimate the lengths people will go to cheat the system. Why rent a car when you are on vacation if you can "buy" a car and return it for a refund at the end of the trip?

It sounds ridiculous, but Tesla had a similar policy and had to end it - because people suck. First Tesla tried putting in place limitations limitations on how often you could buy and return, but apparently even that was not enough to curb the abuse and now there are no returns.

Sadly, that's true. These people always ruin it for everyone else, especially those with legit reasons to return. I suspect Rivian will likely begin to "tighten" the policy when it begins to see higher than expected number of returns. Perhaps it will be terminated at some point like you mentioned.

If there's nothing wrong with the these trucks and people just don't like it for some reason or can't justify keeping it, they will probably do better early on to sell it on the open market vs. returning it. If they do return it, then a variety of things could happen to it... Could be come a demo unit or loaner. It could be resold to someone else. Depending on where it was sold and in what state of process the paperwork is in, the vehicle would have to be sold as used and not new. Even if there's hardly any miles on it.

These are all things we saw happen with Teslas that were returned in the 7 day return period. The majority of them became fleet loaner and demo vehicles. and were sold later as certified pre-owned after they had several hundred or even a few thousand test-drive and loaner miles on them.

Supply and demand will dictate what they’re going to do with those. Currently Tesla is selling used inventory at a higher price than the new ones!

If they can use them elsewhere (loaners, trucks for hubs, test rides, etc) that won't sustain a loss, they'll do that instead.

I doubt they will even offer a discount as long as there is a back order, just extend the warranty by 1000 miles, and let the potential customer take it or keep waiting.

I’ve asked CS multiple times and each time gotten a vague answer. Which means they don’t know or won’t tell yet. Like others have said open market might be good financial route for private sellers as opposed to returning. It

I heard somewhere that they resell with a discount. However, their return policy is complicated.
They have to face a lot of losses due to this return policy. They will only give a full refund if the vehicle is returned within 3-4 days with 250 miles.

Do you have any evidence to back up those claims?
