Does Rivian have what it takes to survive?

The big difference from Audi or Porsche and Rivian is the software stack. The reason why Tesla and Rivian are better positioned is people want an EV that works like their computer. That’s why Tesla is successful and what I like about my Rivian. Legacy auto look like a horse and buggy when it comes to software.

Rivian is built using android automotive. Others are switching to the same thing. If anything rivian has been behind at implementing default features of android automotive such as the google cast feature which has available for a long time before Rivian got it.


Tesla is fundamentally different in that they built their systems entirely from scratch and they are not implementing technology from others.

Even tesla's rendering of the 3D Car or the fsd visualizations is probably a custom rendering engine

Polestar has tons of issues, however, their implementation (Volvo as well as to a degree) of AAOS is pretty damn good when it is firing on all circuits correctly.

Google Assistant, Google Maps with solid route planning, decent Google PlayStore app access (Waze), and even CarPlay; honestly rarely felt the need to use Apple CarPlay because the AAOS system worked so well with Google Assistant for me on calls, texts, music selection, climate control (seats/steering). I would argue it rivaled if not was superior to Tesla's OS in terms of what it could do and how fast it could do it.

I would really like to see Rivian emulate and surpass Polestar's AAOS implementation.

Agreed, that is definitely worse case. Someone like VW or perhaps Amazon would probably jump in if Rivian started to truly tank.

From talking to employees (mobile tech., service center and showroom) in the last month, enthusiasm was lacking and they seemed apprehensive about the future. Usually it's the employee telling the customer to not worry, I found myself in the opposite role trying to be a cheerleader for them about the future.

And it's important to note the joint venture is not with the VW brand, but the VW Group. #1, globally, in the industry by volume and size. The JV is for all brands under VW Group. Strange, but too many people think it's limited to just the VW brand.

I can understand that. This year is going to be challenging for them. BUT, if they can get the R2 to market, Rivian will succeed.

I'm surprised VW didn't acquire them. For all we know they tried and RJ wanted a pretty penny.

Not surprised one bit. It would take a lot more than the $5.8B to acquire Rivian and VW—in the midst of plant closures and laying off thousands—is in no position to spend what it would take. The JV is the lower cost option to get them what they need.

Having apple carplay as an option is better than not having it.

Only not necessary in a tesla because they have text integration, but you can also buy a carplay device that works with tesla, since tesla allows you to have the web browser open while driving.

With more and more EVs getting android automotive, rivian is not going to be ahead for long. They are way behind the EVs in china
