A significant fraction of the rumors about USAID are just plain fictitious.
Let us wait and see. If even 50% of what was told is true - it is already very bad. I do not get why there is opposition for audit. What are they afraid of? That we will see the kick backs?

So the government should pay for a lot of different schools so parents can have a choice? That sounds way more expensive

One dollar wasted is one dollar too many. From any government agency. In the corporate world we evaluate all spending on a continuous basis and are always looking for ways to reduce spending or increase results per dollar.

I don’t understand why we don’t hold our government to the same standards. We already pay more than anyone else for education, yet we aren’t even in the top 20. We are below average as a nation in education. Our system isn’t working, I don’t have all the answers to fix it but we should at least try something different.

The concept of foreign aid doesn’t make a ton of sense to me either, considering we have poor and starving citizens. Why aren’t we prioritizing them? We have veterans that get shit healthcare. Our citizens should come first with our tax dollars. Maybe even fund some programs to reduce recidivism in prisons to ease our burdens there.

There are plenty of people who can be helped here for the foreign aid agency’s 40 billion dollar per year budget.

The government should allow you to enroll in the school of your choice (public, charter, private) and in this case provide same payment (as they provide to the local school district) per student to any school you choose to send your kid. Why is it wrong?

Many states block you from even enroll in public school that is not in your zipcode. Locking many smart kids in bad schools.

It’s called accountability. Schools that use their resources wisely and get results will attract students and schools that waste money and get poor results will lose students.

Because the public schools will get the short end while the private schools get the money. Private/charter schools should get zero gov money. IMO these schools shouldn’t exist

who do you think can afford to send their kids to private schools?
the poorest counties and schools should get more money. Not less.
but then my precious snowflake would have to compete against everyone. So much better if my kids get a good education and everyone that can’t afford it; well tough luck timmy

Audit everything! Why is everyone so scared to take a look? The waste, fraud and abuse has to be an unbelievable number at this point. Our unfunded liabilities are already over $200 Trillion and growing.

If only I could run my business with the phony accounting that goes on in the Fed Gov't
I don’t think anyone is arguing about reviewing the contracts and expenditures, just do it responsibly.

It’s tax season, what do you think the IRS, mortgage company, insurance company, power company, etc…. would tell me if I told them I’m freezing all of my accounts while I review how the money is being spent. What would the HOA say if I fired the gardeners as well during the review?

Absolutely review the contracts, look for waste and places to save money but, do it within the law and responsibly.

I'm not afraid of audits. That's what the inspectors general and GAO and other congressional agencies are for.

I'm afraid of an administration willing to unilaterally destroy what it doesn't understand. Or willing to destroy public entities that get in the way of officials' private businesses. The attempt to cripple NEVI may be an example of privately motivated corruption; without audits and a vigorous press, we can't tell.

USAID was auditing the use of StarLink in Ukraine. From the little I could find about it, that audit seemed fairly routine. Was Musk worried about that audit? Without someone auditing Musk, we'll never know....

Corruption comes in to the thing you most care about, by the door that is least watched. Eternal vigilance isn't just the price of liberty, as Thomas Paine said -- it's the price of everything.

Best wishes!

This thread getting too political. But I will post my 2 cents. I was a teacher for a while in NY then in FL. There is no need for the federal government to to dictate how to teach our kids and hold states hostage of federal $ if they don’t follow their rules. Private schools don’t get funding from the government.

The department of education was established mainly to help with segregation in the 60s to provide equal access to education. This is no longer the case and not needed. The federal government could just allocate the appropriate funds to each state.

Let the states build their own curriculum which gets passed on to the local school district

I think it’s doing a pretty good job of sticking to policy more than politics.

Regarding foreign aid, it’s a complex topic. China is sending billions every year to Africa, securing mineral rights preferences among other things. The same minerals we need for EV batteries. The US dropping foreign aid means the door opens for Russia and China.
