You are assuming that we all only charge our vehicles at charging stations. I charge my overnight at home except when taking road trips.
I suspect we will need about as many DC charging stations as gas stations to create a price balance. Though many people can charge at home on lower rates, the travel network isn't competitive enough. This is evident based on the troubles we have even with home charging available. That's what this thread is about. There will always be a lower percentage of EVs that will need a travel DC network because of home charging, but the time to DC charge up is still 6x longer compared to gas for each. Every gas car needs to go to a gas station. Where the DC kwh prices top out is the question. It could still be a wild ride from here.

That equals ~$.65 a mile when towing! That’s going to get expensive fast. Personally I think this is a bad move at this moment in time. There’s already mountains of FUD getting spewed and Rivian just poured gas on that fire. They want/need to make money, but hurting their vehicles sales in the process isn’t the answer.

Yea our GX470 is half that $.33 per mile (15mpg and $5 CA 89/91 gas) towing our trailer.

If I charge up at home, the Rivan would cost $.15/mile towing though. Just would have to keep the round trip 200 miles or less, lol. Could help average out a longer trip. A long way from $.10/mile home charging versus DC.

Because you didn't use a gallon! You used a quarter of a gallon. You said so yourself, 8kw and it cost you $5.

You are mixing the efficiency of the vehicle with cost of the fuel.
I did use a gallon. I figured a comparable ICE truck gets 20MPG and I calculated the number of KWH to get 20 miles!

They are just taking into account the units of energy in a kWh versus a gallon of gas and comparing the price of each based on unit of measure.

They are not taking into account the difference in efficiency of the two different technologies. That is where the comparison breaks down in traveling cost..
Correct. A gas engine is between 20% and 30% efficient and he seems to think it’s 100%

I just don’t have enough time or crayons to explain it to him anymore.

That's $22 per gallon of gas equivalent now. No way this makes sense any more. Good luck EVs.

Considering I produced 32kwh more from solar than I used today at the house and I put that all in my truck, Good luck ICE vehicles with having to pay $3/gallon at that relic called the gas station.

I wonder if they’re going to soon increase the markup on Tesla superchargers. I would if I were them.

Rivian should charge what is necessary to not make charging a coaster center. For the entire business to be sustainable they must get profitable ASAP. The market is pricing very high odds that they default in the next 5 years and this is a brand I’d love to see exist long into the future. I will use RAN even if they are more than Tesla because only charge on road trips and I don’t want to see the Tesla network drive all others out of business by subsidizing the network with low prices.

Main problem with RAN stations is that they primarily work with Rivian vehicles. There aren't enough Rivian on the road to achieve a high enough utilization rate. Since costs are mostly fixed, the rate has to be high to break even. They need to open their stations to other EVs .

The way to become more popular and more profitable is to have a good QC and not require SC visits. They can start with this. As for their pricing - honestly, I never use RAN as there is always a SC nearby. RAN is not really a serious player in DCFC

They are open to other EV’s, hence the price increase. Just think of the waiting times to charge if rates were kept as cheap as they were. Rivian is playing it right. People need to get over it, or find an alternative.
