Do you not use the cruise control either?
I use Cruise control all the time but not the FSD installed in the Model Y of my wife. It is painful and crazy scary… having Rivian replace Gen 1 hardware at the risk of putting even more financial pressure on them for such a useless feature wouldn’t make sense IMO. I would rather see them turn profitable and ensure long term value of our trucks.

Since you're using Tesla as a shining example of customer satisfaction, and making good on promises...

Did Tesla keep their original preorder pricing of the first roadster? No, because it cost more than they projected to build. Did they eat the cost? Nope, they passed it straight on to the reservation holders.

Did Tesla ship a 500 mile Tri motor cybertruck for the promised 59k? No, becuase it cost too much to build and the battery even with the "pack in the back" can't deliver that range, and is an additional 16k on top of the 100k

Did Tesla milk owners on FSD promises for nearly a decade? Yup.

Did Rivian honor preorder pricing despite the need to increase prices by over 20%? Yup.

Did Rivian have to deal with a supply chain shortage and have to pay a premium to suppliers die to no relationships/low volume? Yup

Does Rivian owe us a full redo of the hardware to make good on that missed feature? I don't think so. But I do feel they should try to bring it closer to what was expected without a hardware swap.
Except for the FSD, none of the Tesla items were unkept promises after you bought the car. With the pricing issues, you still have the information you need before making the purchase. Look, I am in no way a Tesla fan boy. As far as FSD, in my experience they are getting closer and so far they upgraded my car’s hardware for free every time it was needed to get to the next level. Now as far Rivian keeping their promises for the price of early pre orders, you have a short memory. They decided to increase the prices after the first employee deliveries and when everyone canceled their reservation, they said, or sorry just kidding.

My FSD on HW4 is one step away from full on robotaxi.

In Canada perhaps. Have the same issue in Montreal vs when I am in the US. Canada has different road markings (when you can see them). With the quality of the roads we have in Quebec, even I can’t see them. And don’t get me started with climate excuses. Just saying.

Tesla has had their own flaws. That doesn't excuse Rivian for pulling a bait and switch on their loyal customers...

That level 3 promise was removed long before anyone took delivery of an R1.

The hands free portion I think was still there but not level 3.

I take occasional long trips in my R1S, I’m ok with what I had delivered in my G1. If I want more I’ll see what the R2 delivers when I get it or look at a newer R1 once I see things being delivered in those.

You may want to brush up on this timeline.

Tesla absolutely said that the hardware in the AP1 vehicles would be capable of self driving. It was repeated many times and confirmed by the delivery team when I picked mine up in 2016.

This is why even with the additional hardware the G1s had over AP1 in Tesla I assumed what was delivered in the R1S was what I had.

No, it wasn't. They still touted the hardware as capable well after I took delivery.

Yeah I’m bummed that despite the promises Rivian’s driver assistance is just slightly better than the Audi I bought 10 years ago, however I’m moving on and just ordered a comma Ai 3x. So I’ll have hands free driving in my R1 in ~6 weeks for $1200

If there'd been an option to just not have any of the self-driving stuff I would've taken it. Adaptive cruise is about the limit of my trust at the moment. My only engagements with driver+ is accidentally turning it on by hitting the shifter while turning and that's actually worse than not having it. Probably also why they changed how you activate it on Gen 2.

I'd much rather it be simpler to replace a windshield.

They could make good on their original promises and upgrade Gen 1 vehicles to Gen 2 ADAS hardware like Tesla did. I mean, that would be the right thing to do. Not just say "oh well, tough luck..."
Unfortunately, that requires a complete overhaul of wiring harnesses, processors, and a ton of hardware that is labor intensive. I'm in the "Where the hell are my promised features?" camp, but I prefer compensation over hardware updates at this point. Why don't we meet Rivian in the middle? Nonpartisan determination of hardware update cost, parties split the difference.

I had my first "Jesus H!" moment with Gen1 ADAS a couple days ago. I use Driver+ for most of my commute and it was very reliable for where it worked, I normally keep my knee touching the wheel to satisfy haptic feedback, and check work emails or post needless responses on a certain forum. I was in my usual lane, usual speed, and thankfully had my hand on the wheel when it pulled hard right towards a truck next to me, disengaging when I fought it. I couldn't imagine what would happen if I was slacking. After this, I'm much more suspicious of the system in the same conditions. (For those nearby, WA-3 southbound between Trident and Trigger ave, left lane, 72mph, ~3pm, sunny)

Yes they did...and it'll literally never happen. The existing hardware can't even deal with Lane Keep Assist properly and keeps trying to jerk the wheel out of your hands when one lane splits into two or massively phantom braking because people are in a turn lane you're about to drive past. They massively oversold the Gen1 system's capability. At this rate it is what it is...don't like it, upgrade to Gen2.
